The locker room, coaches' offices, student-athlete cafeteria, players' lounge and meeting rooms are designed to flow together and are filled with high-tech gadgetry to enhance efficiency. The design team of ZGF Architects, Firm 151 and Hoffman Construction installed a number of unique features: The marble for the showers was imported from Italy, as was most of the building's furniture; the lockers (which are fully ventilated to eliminate lingering odors) are from Germany and feature coded keypads and a top shelf mounted with shoulder pads and a helmet that spring-boards toward the player; the seamless white floors in the locker room and cafeteria are poured from terrazzo, a composite that resists infection; the specific color pantones of Oregon's uniforms are threaded throughout the building (with green stitching in the chairs used by defensive players and coaches and yellow stitching in the chairs used by the offensive guys); the black-glass walls of the meeting rooms serve as writing boards; several other walls are lined in Nike football leather; the chairs of the auditoriums (yes, there are two) are done in Ferrari leather.

Altogether, the complex promises to be a major draw for recruits. The facade is black glass meant to cloak the building in mystery while also providing bright sunlit spaces within; the designers call it "sunglasses." With this building, Oregon has declared without reservation that it is indeed "the University of Nike.'' Knight and his wife Penny, who declined to reveal the cost behind the project, maintained control of its design and construction in order to meet their standards before deeding ownership to the school. Just last Friday, Knight's right-hand man, Howard Slusher, the former agent, was unhappy with minor scuffs on the black slate floor (imported from Portugal) of the lobby. So, every piece was scheduled to be torn up and replaced.
Good lord...sometimes I really hate the architecture profession. It is stuff like this that gives our line of work such a bad rap. I see their tricks.

I got a chuckle out of the bolded part though... it should read, "Just last Friday, some rich ******* demanded expensive imported material torn up, thrown away, set ablaze, and pulverized in the most wasteful way possible." This is like the whole ignorance as a virtue thing again...are we supposed to be impressed that a minor scuff set this guy off in such a way that he had to go to extreme wasteful measures to have it "corrected"?

I am no psychologist, but I would rather lift in a pink weight room than lift on hardwood floors while looking outside at all of the pale, but nice, Oregonian coeds. There is something about this that just makes me think this is not going to work out well for them.

Sounds like wishful thinking. They'll be (and are) perfectly fine.

Practice facilities are all the rage. It seems every school has new practice facilities. Nike took it to a new level but is there a BCS school out there that doesn't have nice practice facilities now?

It's totally possible that college football players don't require the focus and motivation I do to lift a bunch of heavy weights. I would do better with cinder block though.

Oregon - WTF? I think things are getting out of control

    Y! SPORTS

The purity of football as a college sport is completely gone.

When you spend money at this level, football is no longer a function of college. If anyone questions whether or not it is all about money these days, this should change your mind.

If this has been posted don't get your panties in a wad, just move it.

I see you are an "oldwiseman," but this is kind of the way things are going IMO. 18 year old athletes love these things, and with the ever changing coaching carousel, this is what is going to help draw a kid in. Is it right? Up for discussion, but everyone loves perks and new, shiny things.

No offense oldwiseman, but have you been in a coma for the last two decades? College football has been all about money for that long. Really even longer than that.

Not gonna lie, that's pretty bad-***.

You can spend a lot of time and money picking out the perfect floral bouquet for your date ... but you're probably better off checking if you have bad breath and taking the porn out of the glove compartment.

The moral: you gain more by not being stupid, than you do by being smart. Smart gets neutralized by other smart people. Stupid does not.
