I feel good about this team.. Most talent team we've had under Rhoads.. But also least experienced. I think the talent alone will be enough to be in the 5-7 to 7-5 range, with a shot at being real special over the next few years after.

It's too bad that they can't redshirt Meeks. Hopefully someone can step up and help out this year. He would be a beast with another year in the program.

    This.
This is not a rebuilding year. We have a lot of talent and speed on both sides of the ball and a bowl game should be expected.

Unfortunately, even if he doesn't play a snap on D, they still need big bodies for kick coverage. Stupid homesick freshmen linebackers of the past coming back to bite us in the ***.

I agree that it stinks it didn't work out for him to be redshirted, but maybe he will have the mentality that he has to learn as much as he can because there is a real possibility he might have to use it.

I am kind of interested in this battle of kickers, because I would like to see what Netten can do.

Yeah, I think in the end it will help him out. He will be that much more ready to play significant minutes next year, just like the twins did their sophomore years.

Isn't this still a redshirt year for him if he dresses for games but doesn't get on the field for a snap?

Yes, but I would guess that they won't not play him the entire season, then if Brackens would get injured the second to last game, Meeks voids his redshirt and comes in. It makes more sense to have him play all season, rather than risk not playing him, and still not being able to redshirt him.

Yep. That's my understanding. All the freshman will dress for home games, many will travel if they are on the depth chart, etc.

I'd like to know the inner workings on this...meaning, if a guy say looses his helmet and has to come out for one play...do they immediately send in Meeks or do they have another plan if we'd know it'd only be one play?

I agree. I heard rumors that they may give him the second team reps and have him on the travel squad, but not play him unless there is an injury. This seems like a pretty dangerous strategy. He could void his redshirt at the very end of the year, as you suggest, or could be forced to play signficant minutes against somebody like Oklahoma without ever playing a college snap.

Given the limited depth, it probably makes more sense to play him on special teams, in spot duty/mop-up duty, and against run-heavy teams like Iowa. Wally says he will be fine against the run anyway, so let him get some live experience in those situations early in the year just in case he is needed full-time later in the year.
