    School Start Dates

Heard quite a bit lately (and every summer) about when schools should be allowed to start. I am so sick of ot being a tourism issue. What is best for education in Iowa? Not for businesses. But education. Parents want semesters to wrap up by Christmas break so there isnt content/assignments/finals hanging over break. Well, schools have to start earlier to make that happen.

We should be talking about year-round school to increase student learning.
    Sorry. End of my rant.

State law in MN says we can't start before Labor Day. They claim it is for the farmers......

Yeah. I don't understand at all why "the tourism industry" even has a voice about when school starts/ends.

My understanding is that this is the law here in IA as well, and that nearly every school district petitions the DE for a waiver, which is granted. There was some talk about changing the law so these waivers could not be granted a year or two ago, but it was not passed.

    Re: School Start Dates

We always started around the 26th or 28th of Aug. Basically about 2 days of school then a 3 day weekend for Labor Day. Four day weekend for Tgiving and 2 full weeks for Xmas/NYD. No such thing as a "Spring Break", but a 3 day weekend for Easter. We usually finished up around the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd of June. Of course back then maybe one or two total snow days every couple of years.

School should be after labor day (or at most the week before) to memorial day+snow days.

    Re: School Start Dates

The addition of more and more professional development days has also pushed the start dates earlier amd end dates later.

Imo start should be the week before labor day and end the week before or after memorial day. Three days for thanksgiving, one week for spring break and maybe a day in early october and February (this one as a built in snow day).

Any educational reason for that, or just pulling it out of your ***?

I would like to see a longer school year with a shorter summer break; help kids retain more of what they learn and spend more time in the classroom.

The problem with that is not all schools have A/C which is one reason for starting school after Labor Day so they would avoid the August heat.

    Re: School Start Dates

as a teacher in Des Moines I would love to start after labor day even if it involves going later into June. If anything i think schools in the same area (DM. WDM. SEP, etc) should all start at the same time.

Ideally however, I would like to do year round school with longer x-mas, thanksgiving, and spring breaks and a shorter summer.

August 14th in Monticello. Glad I'm getting out before they institute a year-round school.
