Worst Book You Ever Read ... But Still Finished

I try to never leave a book I start unfinished. But some are painful to get through. The worst was recommended by my mother-in-law (first mistake).

Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter Hoeg

One book I didn't finish, however, was Paper Lion by George Plimpton. Got half way through, and just couldn't read it without falling asleep.

Re: Worst Book You Ever Read ... But Still Finished

I read about a book a week. So I read Twilight SERIES and the 50 Shades of Grey SERIES. Why? Because I could and so I could talk to people about it and I can't believe I did those.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.

I read it in college, thinking it would be the 19th century version of Apocalypse Now. Turns out the film is only very, very loosely based on the book. It's just a slog. Very slow moving, and frankly, not that good.

I read all the Twilight books cuz everyone else in my family was reading them. Fun stories but I agree with Stephen King: Stephenia Meyer can't write worth a ****.

I would say Sail by James Patterson. I learned quickly Patterson appeals more to women.

got an Alex Cross book for Christmas. Never read any of the series before but I finally read it a couple weeks ago and it was a waste of time. Maybe it was better when Patterson started the series?

The last Hunger Games book was just painful. The "love triangle" was one of the most annoying things I've ever suffered reading through. I really had a hard time finishing that book. I think I turned to alcohol as a reward for each chapter I finished.

I remember reading Grapes of Wrath in junior high and thinking it was the most painful book I've ever had.

The Scarlet Letter in high school. I loved every other novel and a lot of the short stories I had to read for my high school lit classes, but couldn't stand that one.

    Wicked

I would have thrown that book into a fire if I hadn't promised my mom I'd let her know how it ended (she couldn't get through it)

Tale of Two Cities in high school, because they made me. I'm sure it's quite the work of art and might be better if I read it now, but reading it then made my soul hurt.

Worst book that I never finished: Dianetics by L Ron Hubbard. Didn't know what it was supposed to be about, but even at 15, I knew horse **** when I saw it.

Wicked was amazing compared to the other books in the series.

Yeah, I read the 50 Shades of Grey series as part of a book club. Now, I don't mind smut, but this was such poorly-written smut that it made my head hurt. I bounced from that book club after that.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig

I get it, you can't truly define the word "quality." Did you really need to write 500 pages to get that point across?

The Twilight Series. I read it solely so I could see what everyone was talking about.......I knew I would hate them and I did.

I had to read Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson in middle school and I still don't remember what the hell it was about. I just muddled through it but never did figure out what was going on.
