Gary Thompson, "The Roland Rocket," was ISU's first one-thousand-point career scorer and the first Cyclone basketball player selected as a first-team All-American, following the 1957 season. He concluded his three-year career with 1,253 points, which still ranks fifteenth on ISU's all-time scoring list. His greatest legacy may be as Iowa State's first multisport All-American. Later,* through television, Thompson built on his Iowa State legend as a nationally respected broadcaster whose name became as familiar with young Cyclone fans as with their grandparents, who had watched him star in the ISU Armory.* Over five decades, on the court and off, Iowa State may not have had a greater ambassador than the man from Roland.
