    Negative Recruiting Article

There's an ISU mention about Jeremiah George and what a coach told him about ISU but it's not much. SIAP.

That doesn't really surprise me. It's cold in Iowa during the winter. We recruit a lot of Texas and Florida kids.

Iowa State linebacker Jeremiah George recalls a BCS-level assistant coach telling him to stick his head in his freezer and leave it there for a few hours if he wanted to know what he was getting himself into at Iowa State.

"It was about the coaching change and weather," George said. "Always about the weather."

    Re: Negative Recruiting Article

This is just a terrible negative recruiting pitch. If a recruit has any interest or dreams of playing in the NFL then they better get used to playing in the cold. Making that adjustment in college would help. The NFL regular season goes to the end of December! Suck it up!! Players are not afraid to take on and tackle a 6 foot 220 lbs running back going full speed but playing a game when its 40 out is going to cause them to think twice?!

It's not like the old days when ISU didn't have a fancy indoor practice facility.

That being said ......after living in better climate since leaving Ames.....Ames weather really does suck balls

It bothers me that no player ever says who are the culprits on negative recruiting. Maybe if these aholes were outed, this crap would stop.

I agree 100% with this. However, I think what it's getting at is that certain other things are better in warmer weather than in the cold. Women are tanner, swimming is more pleasant, walking to class isn't a chore, etc. All of these factor into someone's decision, but pretty much every part of the country has a winter besides the Deep South/SW. If weather is the only knock on our program, then that is A-OK with me.

I understand what you are saying but can also see the other side. If I am on track to go to the NFL, then why not wait and address the weather issue if and when I have to cross that bridge. I can see why guys would choose to make their homes for 4-5 years in the sunny, warm south to play ball, especially when they are from there then maybe go on to play in a cold weather city or visit there a few times per year.

Not my opinion personally but I can see why they would like it and don't blame them for that choice.

Another solution would be for players from warmer climates who play at cold climate schools to spread the word that the weather isn't that big of a deal relative to other things (which they probably already do), and then when the negative recruiters start spouting off about the weather, the recruits will recognize such tactics as being lame...

Heck, there are even northern climates that are even better....

Iowa sucks in winter, and sucks in hot as hell humid summer. At least in Minny/Wisconsin, Michigan, the summers are fantastic, and spring through Fall are pretty breathtaking as well with so much natural landscape. I hate Wisconsin winters, so grey and long, and we talk about moving somewhere else, and then summer comes, and it is absolutely wonderful. All I remember about summers in Iowa is sweating my *** off.

$100 Urban Meyer and his staff were quick to utilize this tactic back when he was a Florida.

I don't get why negative recruiting is crap. It makes sense to do it, and I'd be very surprised if every staff in the country didn't do it.

I don't think it's as much about playing in the cold, as getting up in the morning and walking to that 8 am class when it's 12 degrees outside. The Cold weather playing argument really doesn't hold much water, since there really are that few games during the year when it's downright cold. It's the rest of the time, when you aren't playing football that you notice how cold it really is.

I've lived in Minnesota all my life, and my teen years were split between MN and Florida. I can tell you that people in the south think that 50s/60s is cold as hell, and are wearing jackets while im in shorts and a t-shirt. It will be cold no matter where you go, because your body adjusts. Sure, it may not be arctic wasteland cold in the south, but somewhere in Florida there is a dude complaining that winters are cold.

    tl:dr grass is greener

*edit* sheeeeit have you ever tried running in 100 degree Florida heat? I thought I was running through a forest fire. I'd much rather play in cold weather any day, but thats probably the Minnesota in me talking.
