    Inlaws, do you like them?

Looking to get married and not sure about my feelings towards them or theirs towards me. Seems most my coworkers dislike theirs. Please share.

Some get along with inlaws perfectly. Sounds like your case is similar to mine. It takes time. Eventually, you will learn to 'understand' each other. If not, I give you 3 years...tops.

EDIT: Would be a good idea, IMO, to ask for a blessing before popping the question.

Just remember, you're screwing their daughter. How would you feel about that at first?

Re: Inlaws, do you like them?

I was lucky enough to marry a woman whose parents are divorced and both be remarried, so I have two sets of in laws. The parents are great and have been quick to accept me as part of the family. For me the difficult part hasn't been the relationship between me and the in-laws, but more just getting used to sharing family events like holidays and such. It's pretty much impossible to please everyone, so don't even try.

I would be curious to hear a story about somebody who didn't get the blessing. That would be awkward.

I don't have inlaws, but all my extended family are kinda dickheads.

Do you mean somebody just not asking at all, or someone actually being shot down by the father? Maybe it makes me sound like a huge jerk, but the thought never really occurred to me to ask my wife's parents. Although I do recall a conversation with my wife's biological father where I told him I was going to marry his sooner than later. And I had a similar conversation with my wife's mother.

Re: Inlaws, do you like them?

My wife is the baby of ten kids, so it's a pick 'em. Love most of her siblings, but some are trouble. Her sister's husbands (my BILs) are awesome though so love them. If not for them not sure I'd have lasted in the family!

Remember, you're unique. Just like everyone else.

I mean actually getting shot down by the father.

Re: Inlaws, do you like them?

Like mine for the most part. I think we have learned to accept each other. Wasn't so sure at the start. F-I-L is a farmer who basically can fix anything... Plumbing, electrical, framing, welding, rebuild engines. Pretty sure he thought I was a waste at first because I pay others to do those things for me. My M-I-L is a little overbearing. Has caused some tension between us in the past but things have been good for the past 2-3 years.

Meh. Just wait till you get to the planning stage where Fiance starts disagreeing with your M-I-L-to-be.

    That's duck and cover time.

Those 2 disagree with each other every time they talk. I'm used to that. What I'm struggling with is trying to make my mom happy, and trying to make fiance happy.

    I plead the fifth.

But hey, as long as they aren't threatening to kill you, you're probably doing ok!*

I think my father initially didn't want to give my husband his ok (even though mom was like *******, what are you doing?!)

He wanted me to "date more guys". Though my mom pointed out "what if she marries a guy from CA (husband's family is local) and they move out there and you never see her?

Mostly it was dad not wanting to let go and admit that his daughter was old enough to get married. He likes my husband a lot, just to clarify.
