Rewatched ISU-WVU, feel great about SR

So until today, I couldnít bring myself to watch the full DVR recording of last yearís WVU game. It just ****** me off too much considering that a bowl trip to the west coast was apparently at stake. But, itís mid-July, and Iím hard up for football.

After watching the game live in JTS, I had a hard time agreeing with those who were overly critical of Richardsonís performance. I thought he had played well, all things considered. That opinion was only strengthened after watching the game again.

He had a couple of mistakes in the first half but, overall, he made VERY good decisions, running and passing. Given the protection that he was provided, he made the most of it and kept ISU in the game at half with a couple of TDs.

Second half, Richardson starts it off with a GREAT touchdown pass to Bundrage streaking down the sideline to give ISU the lead, 21-20. The way the 3rd quarter unfolds, defensively and offensively, ISU appears to be in great position. VDKís run on the fake punt on 3rd and long was a beauty, but we donít capitalize in WVU territory.

Heading into the 4th quarter, the defense starts missing tackles and making me nervous. First ISU possession of the 4Q, weíre behind schedule due to a personal foul penaltyÖ punt. WVU regains the lead on another kick that hits the upright and deflects through.

7-ish minutes left, West drops a first down catch, but ISU regains the lead on a FG. And then we get burnt by the 75-yard touch pass to Austin. Hmmrph. 2-point conversion good, WVU up 31-24. But this post is about SR, and now itís on his shoulders.

Richardson makes some great decisions on the zone-read, and ISU marches downfield into scoring position. Great toss to Lenz in the endzone gets knocked loose as he rolls out of bounds. ISU then gets helped out by a personal foul, 1st and goal. And we all know what happens after thatÖ

Game over, but SR did his job and played well- no critical mistakes and made some great plays. I feel MUCH better about our QB after finally rewatching this game. The criticism of SR in this game is totally unwarranted.

He was certainly solid. Not a good completion percentage but based on the conditions and some dropped passes by receivers I don't think that was his fault.

If nothing else he won't have the turnover issues that have really hurt Iowa State the last couple years. I expect this offense to be the best of the Rhoads era and show a lot of promise before taking off in 2014.

Re: Rewatched ISU-WVU, feel great about SR

Totally agree with you, he was a freshman making his 1st B12 start, he game before was actually against a high school team. To be honest I loved that he didn't constantly challenge the wind. He was smart enough to take what was given and that was reflected in his total yards rushing.

I am very high on SR, 1. his ability to not turn the ball over is huge. 2. I think he throws a good ball, that one to Bundrage was a thing of beauty for a td, I look for that to coninue this year. 3. He runs smart, he may not be the most electric guy out there but he is effective.

A couple of things he will improve on is knowing when to slide, he did take some big shots last year and that is totally fixable. Did I mention he is only a sophmore?

Oh and we have the number 1 receiver in the nation coming in next year. I have said this before, if this receiving corps can have a good year, you add a kid like Lazard to it may resemble adding a match to gasoline.

Take away the one play by Austin (which had bad positioning on that side of the defense) and one play by Woody (where the helmet unbelievably knocked the ball loose) and we win that game (maybe in OT).

Re: Rewatched ISU-WVU, feel great about SR

I see plenty of positives with a few negatives with Sam. I think the positives have been trumpeted quite often since last season. Here are my biggest concerns:

    1) Arm strength. He's ok but doesn't possess a great arm for tight windows
    2) Accuracy. He's young and this will improve, but he does get a little lax with his fundamentals which lead to some bad throws last year
    3) Athleticism. Sam made great reads on the option last year. However, Sam isn't the most fleet of foot and sometimes tries to make runs he's not capable of. If he makes his read and gets the 3-5 yards that are available to him instead of trying to get something to the sideline, I think we'll see a lot of 1st downs this year out of the O.

yes, our starting safety was out of the game, he was injured I believe. The back up was a walk on. He ran right up at Austin instead of angling toward him. The result was he miss judged Austin speed and it was over. Had he angled, Austin would have had to turn back inside where help could have easily got him.

I still have that game on my DVR, haven't had the guts to watch it as it made me so mad losing a game like that with so much on the line, especially after seeing Geno Smith's antics. I wanted our guys to pull that game out so badly. I'll probably watch it soon....the dog days of summer are here again.

In his ~3 games last year, Richardson had 9 total TDs and 1 total TO.

    9/1 TD/TO ratio.

    Let that sink in.

One game against Kansas (awful all-around), one game against WVU (awful defense), one game against Tulsa (mediocre).

    Let that sink in.

Re: Rewatched ISU-WVU, feel great about SR

I think that SR will do fine. BUT, they can't have him running that zone read every other play. If they try that, he won't make it to the midway point of the season. Let the kid scramble when he needs to (and slide or run out of bounds whenever possible), but keep designed QB runs to a minimum.

I really believe that Messingham has this year to show he can call plays at this level. If he doesn't do a better job, or calls the zone read so much that our QB gets hurt, Sturdy or Klenakis will be calling plays next year...if not midway through this year.

Last year, I saw the worst separation (sans a healthy Lenz) from our WRs than I have in years. Add the drops to that, its easy to make the QB look inefficient.
