That was an interesting visitor perspective. Appears he puts more work and thought into his casual journal than a lot of columnists who do it for a living.

Re: David Byrne on Des Moines...

Yeah...I've been following his blog since I saw he wrote Part I. So interesting that he takes in each city he visits on tour and than shares thoughtful impressions via his blog. Thought this was worth highlighting:

My friends, of course, thought I was crazy. Des Moines, a good place to live? Are you serious? Well, yeah, I think I am (serious, not crazy), and though my impression was brief and fleeting we nomads do have the opportunity to see a lot of these mid size towns…places a lot of folks in the big cosmopolitan cities never visit. And some of it is sad, but sometimes, like here, there seems to be reason for optimism

Thanks for linking. That was a really interesting outsider perspective on my hometown.

david byrne found out a secret many of us in DM metro already know, its got the perfect balance of big city with small town to raise a family, have a decent job and live a pretty damn good life.

Does it have pro sports or an awesome music scene? No, but it has a little of everything to make most people happy....

Byrne is a genius. And we Iowan's like the outside world to see us as unhip bumpkins. It keeps the riff-raff out of the state (excluding hawk fans).

Minor and developmental league clubs are nice, but I think we all understood what he was implying.

Re: David Byrne on Des Moines...

The problem living in Des Moines is you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack. You may find yourself living in another part of the world. You may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile...

It is no Chicago, but this city has a very good music scene. You obviously don't go downtown much.

NHL teams need to be added to the favorite teams section.
