Then, there were (and still are) the detractors. This crew says, “If he was ever a walk-on, he’s not good enough to ever be more than a role player in the Big 12."
Having watched Jeff Hornacek develop from a walkon, I'd never, ever say something like that.

    Paul Rhoads' players never quit.
    (They just disappear offseason)

We are so deep at guard it has me a little scared haha.

    SDW
    Long
    Bluford
    Kane
    Bubu
    Morris
    Thomas

7 guys, 2 spots to start, and likely 2 spots off the bench. I'm sure some of them could slide over to the 3 role occasionally but then you are taking out a Hogue or Edozie. That then makes 9 guys for 3 spots starting and 3-4 spots on the bench... The future is bright my fellow Cyclones!

Bubu is quickly becoming the new Steele Jantz. Continuously hyped up in the off-season.

I think we'll have 3 guard spots. Edozie will never play the 3 and I think Hogue will be in the Ejim role.

Edozie won't be spending anytime at the 3 and Hogue will play a decent amount of minutes at the 4. I think there will be more minutes available at the three than you think but you are right we have a lot of quality options. The battle for the 5th starting spot and 1st & 2nd guard off the bench is going to be interesting. I can't remember a time where there was this much uncertainty about who will get playing time.

Are we deep, or do we have a lot of guys that are equally unproven?
I like where the program is going, but if we end up having 3 above average Big 12 guards next year I will be pleasantly surprised.

Re: Monday Musings: Bubu, Niang/Hoiberg deal, thoughts on every player

What's interesting about the guards next season is the fact that let's just assume that Bubu and Kane both start. Well even though Bubu's shot has improved, we've yet to see that in an actual game right?

Well Kane isn't a shooter. Not at all. A guy can make an argument that of the projected starters, Niang is the 2nd best proven 3-point shooter in the mix.

Get ready for a different style of ball folks. This starting 5 won't be nearly as good of a 3-point shooting team as ones we've seen in the past.

Maybe, but maybe not. Matt Thomas is an upgraded version of Scotty C and it seems like Naz's shot has improved a lot too. I guarantee Niang/Ejim will be much improved from 3 as well (not that they were bad). Clyburn was a fine shooter, but his 3 point shot wasnt his best attribute (struggled at times with it).

So yeah, lets say Bubu and Kane arent the greatest shooters. We could still run a lineup full of shooters in Niang, Thomas, SDW, KJ Bluford, etc. I still think we average 7+ threes made per game.

If Thomas can step up in the non-conference season, and can shoot the 3 well, I think he will end up with a starting role for that reason. While he hasn't been able to prove it in big-12 play, I think his past bodes well for us.

I also really think with SDW, Morris, & Thomas... once they get the experience next year, throw them in with Niang and in a year we could be really dangerous from beyond the arc. This is all potential, so we'll have to see how it pans out. But I like where we are now, and how our future outlook is.

A lot of unprovens at guard, yes, but a lot of high quality unprovens in my opinion.

My mistake. I agree but it'll be interesting to see. I Kane, Ejim, Niang are obviously going to start (2 above average 3 point shooters) and then comes the pg and sg debate. I really dont see Kane starting at point if Bubu/Morris can handle it. I like Thomas/SDW/Long/Bluford for 2-3 spots. Hopefully Hogue can play the 4. Edozie/Gibson back up the 5 spot.

We have so many options its crazy

Not disagreeing with you, just curious, but you said you don't see Kane starting at point if Bubu/Morris could handle it. Since he's not known as a great shooter, where do you see him playing then? The '3'?

I hightly doubt our "style" will change. Fred has more options this year, but I don't think we lose much by way of 3 point shooting ability. Kane has been documented as an average 3 point shooter, and we have seen Bubu can be inconsistent. Also, I don't know much about Hogue but I don't think he is billed as much of a shooter. Aside from that, I think Bluford, Thomas, SDW, Georges, Melvin and to some extent Morris are good 3 point shooters. That gives us a 3 point option at literally every position. So while we are not used to have more traditional big guys (Edozie) and are not used to point guards who are a bit of a liability shooting from 3 (Kane, Bubu) I don't think we lack the shooting that has made us so special the last few years.
