Niang tells KIMT 3 Hoiberg was offered Celtics job

Mason City interview with Georges. Mentions that Hoiberg told him he was offered the job, but turned it down.

    Wow.

Hoping Niang had CFH's permission to leak that little nugget...

Just a guess but if CFH didnt want that info out in the public he likely would not have shared it with his team.

Dont know that for sure but with social media and everything the way it is today you shouldnt tell anyone anything that you dont want to be made public. Especially a 19-20yr old

More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”

Said in the interview it was in reply to a text....so, to me that seems much more of a private communication as opposed to a statement to a team.

I'm with ya though, now days very difficult to not have stuff get out. I wonder what the coaches specifically say to them about social media and info that "doesn't leave the room" vs public knowledge? Some of it is obviously a give in (like, if say, QB x is starting this week instead of another, the team may know that, but won't share) but some may not be.

Hoiberg's text was a joke. Niang was fondly remembering it in the interview. Nothing more than this.

    1) Just something to keep in mind...not all private jokes should be fondly remembered in a public interview.

    2) It wasn't exactly clear from the interview that Niang was joking about the "Hoiberg turned down the Celtics job" part.

In any case, I'm sure CFH can use this as a teaching experience if need be.

Whoa. Don't know if that makes me feel better that he turned it down, or worse knowing how serious NBA teams are about getting Fred.

Better. I know the roster is a mess but that is a great job if given the proper timeline.

It only confirms in my mind that Fred likes what he has at ISU. As long as Fred is alive, he will always have the opportunity to coach in the NBA. Chances to coach at your hometown and alma mater don't open up very often. If he leaves and is fired after 3 years, there is no guarantee he will be able to come back to ISU and he would really put the AD in a tough bind.

    Couldn't agree more.

And seriously, why would Fred jump? He can print his own ticket in Ames.

Well, I will say that it reassures me about the judgment of the Celtics--because Fred's clearly a better qualified candidate for a pro job than the guy they did hire.

And after saying that, Georges said he is confident Fred will be here for a couple years. That's not very long!!

Makes me feel on edge that Niang would say that.

Re: Niang tells KIMT 3 Hoiberg was offered Celtics job

    That's crazy if it's true.

Then again if NBA teams are already calling him after just 3 years as a head coach, he'll probably keep getting calls to coach NBA teams after just about every season. So I bet he'll be able to make the jump to the NBA whenever he feels like it's right for him.

I bet stories like this will be a recurring theme in off-seasons from here on out.

I hope the NBA keeps knocking. Means hes doing something right. Hoiberg isnt going to jump ship anytime soon.
