CCL Awards: Bubu named MVP, Ezodie on D

Coming at you live from the CCL title game...

Bubu Palo was just named the league's MVP.

Daniel Edozie won the defensive MVP award.

"Newcomers of the Year" went to Matt Thomas/Monte Morris.

The newcomers award sounds like they were trolling us deliberately.

Outstanding job by all these Cyclones!

So how much effort did Edozie have to put in to win Defensive MVP in a league that doesn't play defense. Kind of like winning tallest midget.

But still, I hope he can just play some D and rebound, that is all he needs to do this year.

Ill put any dollar that if I get this ball again, Long said, Its going in.

How do the guys look physically? Has anyone noticeably beefed up or slimmed down?

More importantly, are any of them showing negative body language?

I know that McGee won MVP last year and I assume Royce did the year before. Does anybody know who won them all before that? I'm just wondering if there is a correlation between winning MVP and a break out season.

I think Diante Garrett won it the year before Royce but I am not 100% positive.

Didn't Melvin Ejim win MVP at least once?

Can someone tell me more about how Morris played? I got to attend CCL only twice, never for a full night, and bummed that I never got to see Morris play. I see that he had good scoring numbers.

How did Morris compare with Bubu, Naz, Thomas, SDW? Was he scoring a lot off drives? Jumpshots off his own moves? Spot-up shots off passes?

Niang has definitely lost some bad weight. He doesn't look as soft as he did last year (body wise).
Other than that, haven't really noticed any changes in the returning players.

    As for the new guys:
Matt Thomas has a really solid build. Doesn't look like a freshman at all.
KJ is pretty small. Needs to put on some muscle. Could have troubles against larger defenders.
    Don't think Hogue is quite 6'6". Would guess he's closer to 6'4.5" - 6'5"

Sounds like Bluford is flat out going off right now from 3 in the championship.

Niang seems even more nimble on his moves around the basket. The dropped weight has to help. Sometimes he looked like he is falling (or twisting an ankle), but he never seems to miss near the basket, even though he is twisting and reaching for reverses. I absolutely love his body control and sense for the basket. This year, we are going to need a highlight video just of guys he fakes out of their shorts.

I realize it is the CCL, but the shooting percentages from outside for the guards is still encouraging. This may end up being an even better outside shooting team than last year's.

-Be kind. That is something you will never regret. You will never say to yourself when you are old "I wish I was not good to that person".

Re: CCL Awards: Bubu named MVP, Ezodie on D

I probably went to more Cap City games than I ever have this year. Of course, one I did miss was Royce's. So this thread is probably as good as any to share my thoughts.

    1. As someone said, Georges is noticeably thinner this year. He's still the same old Georges though. Great player, great nose for the basket, great competitor. Georges and his team just didn't have it tonight. Shots weren't falling and KJ was putting on his show. But you could tell that Georges was irritated that they were losing.

    2. Speaking of KJ, the first few times I went, I wasn't impressed with his 3 point shooting, but was impressed with some other things. I thought he played hard for the cap city league and I thought he was really quick and had a good mid-range game. But holy ****, did his shot come around Friday and tonight. It will be something to watch if he can ever capture that in a real game. It's hard not to be excited about him. He's not going to be Tyrus, so everyone should put that out of their mind. But he'll have nights when he is like Tyrus. I think his mid range came could be better than Tyrus and I think he could be a good defender.

    3. Kind of surprised Edozie got defensive player of the year, but I'll say this. He played obviously hard in the games I saw. He's going to be a guy that gives 100%. I'm not sure if that will be good enough at times, but he'll be an easy kid to root for. He came out Friday night and scored 6 points fast and then pulled something on a dunk and didn't come back. Hopefully, the injury wasn't serious.

    4. Thomas has a D-1 build already. Hopefully, his defense is serviceable. We'll need his shooting. He'll be a good one.

    5. Monte started out the league shooting really well from 3. The last few weeks, it hasn't been as good. I'm excited about him. I'm not sure if he'll get a ton of minutes right away. Hope he keeps his head up. He's got a lot of talent, but coming in and playing PG is not easy.

    6. I get exhausted thinking about SDW. I like him a lot. I think he will be a good player. I think that he will be the cause of a lot of discussion on here. I don't think he'll start. And I think there will be a segment of the fanbase that will be irritated by this.

    7. Bubu and Naz. I don't care if it is the CCL, averaging a triple double is pretty impressive. Bubu is better than he has been. He's going to play a lot. If there was a runner up for MVP, I wouldn't have been shocked if it was Naz. He is the kind of leader that every team wants. Other than Georges and Matt, I think he was the most consistent with shooting the 3. I won't be shocked if both see more minutes than SDW and Monte, at least early in the year.

    8. Hogue and Percy. Percy doesn't look interested. I refuse to judge him too much based on that. For all we know, he works hard all day and then doesn't have it for the CCL games. Hogue has been hit or miss. He was a big miss Friday. He was really good tonight.

    9. The team that won tonight (Bluford and Hogue) was probably the team that I thought was the worst team for several weeks (I fully admit I may not have known much). I wouldn't have picked them to win Friday night and I certainly wouldn't have picked them to win two games back to back tonight. A lot of that had to do with KJ's shooting.

    10. Curtis Stinson was there tonight with his son. I'm not sure what he is doing now---we thought maybe he played in Europe last year. Anyway, it is kind of nice that he still is a fan, even though the program has changed so much.
