8th Graders Being Held Back on Purpose for BBall

Very Interesting practice starting where some 8th graders are purposely holding themselves back so that they can have a competitive advantage and more time to develop. This college bball is becoming a business more than ever

They, too, can peak out at 17.

Nothing new as everyone else has been saying. Also when has college bball not been a business?

I know of situations where this has occurred. Often as younger kids. Works great in middle school, but when all the kids catch up in physical maturity it generally isn't as much as an advantage.

Holding a kid back simply for sports just exposes those parents as stupid.

Or smart, if their kid turns out to be a great athlete and gets a full ride scholarship.
I know a lot of people that have done/do this for football.

I don't feel so bad about sucking at sports now, considering I was a year and a half behind my "regular" class in starting college when I was seventeen.

That means I was going up against a 16.5 year old when I was 14? Sheesh. Not that I think it happened much for cross country or track, but that's almost ridiculous to conceive.

My grandfather did this in 1928. Many males did at that time or they wait a year to start kindergarten. Not really that uncommon now (starting late) actually makes sense since boys are at least a year behind girls in developmental age.

Re: 8th Graders Being Held Back on Purpose for BBall

Actually I just listened to a podcast on this very article on the Jalen Rose report earlier this week... there is no disadvantage for the kids and a large number of the prospects do it. Additionally, if the prospects out perform they can take summer classes, reclassify to their original grades and then go to college. Wiggins and Noel were two who reclassified up a year because they had already made a name for themselves. Like other have posted has been going on for years and if the kid can get a scholarship from doing it they can save the family a lot of money. here is the podcast good listen for anyone wanting to kill some time. This big in Texas. Football, bball, track, you name it. Personal trainers for a lot of very good kids. BIG MONEY IN THE PROS. Full ride to ISU is ??? 17000 for 4 years is $68000 plus. Private schools are $35000 plus, per year. It just hurts the kids who don't get held back.

There are something like 5 million kids that play high school sports. Only something like 130,000 get scholarships to D1 and D2. So what will most likely happen is he will be a 23 year old college senior, explaining to his friends why he repeated a grade in middle school. Brilliant!
