He was pretty clear that 100 flights per year isn't possible for him.

The NBA discussions about the bus sound very interesting. Those are actual concerns to complicate the issue.

Same for me. Especially part about a bus being a possible infringement.

After the media left and people were done getting autographs I noticed a couple of boys that keep coming up to RW and messing with him. Then I noticed it was hoiberg's family that was there. Only one missing was Fred.

    1. Mental health problems don't just go away willy nilly. Imagine how "old" it must be getting for him.
    2. The disease is the issue and is the reason for him to not be on the court.

There are definite problems with the way Royce has handled things but there are a lot of things out of his control working against him here.

Thats pretty cool. Did Royce let one of Fred's kids rain a three over him?

I don't think Fred can be at the games. I could be wrong, but I think its against NCAA rules.

Correct. Would be considered extra practice time by the NCAA.

Sometimes I wonder if Hoiberg was played for a fool with the whole Royce thing. But then I realize that Hoiberg appears to have a personality trait that few people do, he just seems to give people the benefit of the doubt. He seems to not judge people. This showed itself in Royce probably the most, but it also showed in guys like Korie and Chris Allen who were kicked off their previous team. I have no idea what any player is like in real life, but to see guys thrive in basketball is really cool.

After all the talk about mental health protocol, I think I learned more about it from this interview than from everything else that has been said by him or anyone else. Sounded like good, common sense. Found a doctor that all parties can trust.

Royce seemed to enjoy being with his most die-hard fans. When the crowd cheered at his first free throw, he seemed to get a good laugh out of it. And he did turn it on in the end, showing some classic Royce floor presence.

Being in Philly...lots of East coast teams are closer meaning he can bus more often. Might be a win/win.

'in real life', I've been a leader for a few years, I inherited a team that was underperforming. I became a leader from technical support staff supporting the process to leading the people doing the process. I have dealt with 'Royce at Minnesota' (talented at the process, but things outside of that are causing issues), and I've dealt with 'Royce at ISU' (you pick up a throw away, but you think you can make something out of them).

I've been amazed at 2 things: how much I feel like a psychologist at times, and how much understanding people, what motivates them and their strengths/weaknesses can make a difference. WRT Royce at ISU, I inherited a woman who I was told 'should just retire already'. The person was also completely unhappy, she knew that 'they think I'm worthless'. In talking with her, the only reason she's working is she wants something to keep her engaged. Where she thought she'd be engaged but had been moved out of, she actually was starting to deteriorate due to fine motor skills, but she didn't want to admit it.....I'm rambling...I kept her where she was 'miserable', but made one small change, and she's not only happy, she's seen as a leader/mentor. Had I not gotten to know her and really evaluate her strengths and weaknesses, I wouldn't have gotten there.

I have said it before and I don't know that it got much traction, but I think part of RW's success here was the year he had to adjust. From everything I've heard/read of him, he's a detail freak, he's a routine freak, and his anxiety disorder...best way I can describe it (I have 2 employees with it) is that when something gets a person with this out of comfort, their mind starts working...you and I can at some point say...STFU, you're being dumb...these people can't without help. So Royce had a year with no basketball pressure to set up his life, set up his routine, without the pressure of 'hey Royce, you missed that shot there in the 3rd quarter, what happened?'. What made him successful was the transition period, I think. Maybe CFH got lucky, maybe he realized the conditions would allow for a perfect storm.

Final thought...it takes a heck of a person to be a leader, but if you get the chance, try it...you'll learn more about yourself than you do those you lead.
