I'm rather glad this happened after we flew this week.

(not that I'm glad that it happened, I hope everyone is ok, from people on the plane it seems that all are fine)

From the live footage from the chopper, looks like they touched down too early on the runway and hit the tail of the plane (since it's missing). just my initial observation.

Just keep in mind that flying is the safest mode of travel in the world and that it is much, much safer than driving.

There are thousands of flights across the country and the world every day, and you almost never hear about anything going wrong. On average, there are more than 13,000 car accidents every day but those don't make the news. So don't let the media scare you into being afraid of flying.

Ha, you sound like my fiance! I totally understand that, it's just the fact that I have no control while flying but driving I feel I am a good enough driver that I can control what I am doing. Obviously I know I can't control other drivers...just hard to explain. I've only had this anxiety for about three years. I know this sounds dumb but I had a dream the night before a flight three summers ago when I was flying back to DSM and we crashed and I died. Ever since then I have had issues.

Another thing is that it is natural for a person to be on the ground. People were created to live on ground and it is not natural that they are over 30,000 feet in the air.

Though there are thousands of flights per day, there are millions of motor vehicle "drives" per day, with hundreds of millions of miles driven. The vast majority of motor vehicle accidents are not fatal. I understand that more often than not, airplane "accidents" are not fatal.......but when I think of airplane accidents I think of planes falling out of the sky from thousands of feet up, not the "accidents" where a plane runs into another one while on taxi out to the runway.

True flight anxiety can't be circumvented by thinking about how safe flying is, statistically speaking. Ask me how I know. Had to skip a flight from Dallas to DSM recently on a connection because of flight anxiety that had been exacerbated by a rough flight in that had been delayed, thus eating up the layover down time I use to calm the nerves.

So compare plane landings to cars stopping and the stats look a lot different.

How could it have crashed into the ground if nothing got screwed up while it was in the air? It's not like he rolled the thing taxiing to the terminal.

I see at least two or three rear-ender accidents going to or from work every week. On a 7-minute commute.

I also live 6 blocks from the Des Moines airport. Yet to see/hear a plane crash.

It's not "natural" to travel at 75 miles/hour in a metal cube powered by a combustion engine, either. Nor is it "natural" to wear glasses or to sleep indoors. What's your point?

I don't mean to belittle flight anxiety. I am just mostly frustrated with the media's fascination with any complication in air travel, which I believe contribute to flight anxiety and make people worry more about something that is extremely safe.

With that said this is still a tragedy now that NBC is reporting fatalities.
