I don't like soccer, but I would watch it a week straight before watching a full baseball game or golf tournament.

I don't dislike baseball either, and going to a game is decent fun, although most of that is drinking beer and eating nachos which I suppose I could do anywhere. But the idea of spending 3 to 3.5 hours watching a game on TV is completely crazy to me.

I love the NFL and even that is pushing it at 3 hours per game. Maybe I have ADD.

I don't hate nascar either, but don't watch it, Indy is a good time. Baseball is one of few sports I just can't stand to watch.

Come on, Cubs. As a Cub fan, you'd better be singing at the 7th inning stretch!

Re: This never happens in baseball....

In comparing American football to soccer, I would like to point out that the "constant" action touted by some soccer fans is mainly centered around 4-6 players while the others jog towards points on the field that will give them an advantage. Very rarely are most players directly involved at any given moment in time. In American football, most players are involved physically during the play and have their jogging time in between plays. I enjoy both, but will watch a college football game over just about anything. I love going to baseball games in person, can only watch about 2 innings on TV.

Back to the real topic, it seems as though we hear about more violent riots/deaths/injuries from fights surrounding soccer matches than baseball games. Is that due to the sheer volume of soccer matches? Don't know, but the fans do seem to be a little more unruly than your typical beat down Cubs fan.

This was the field where the incident happened, it wasn't exactly a large scale or probably particularly well sanctioned event.

ok yeah, that's not exactly professional soccer then. Wasn't there an incident in the US recently with a ref at a youth type event? That got killed or seriously injured? Maybe I'm just making that up.

Although I would *like* to think if that happened here we wouldn't behead and quarter the person responsible.

This is the soccer field in Port Said, Egypt, where 79 people were killed and over a thousand were injured.

Al-Masry won, 3-1. And as a result, they, YES, the winning team, stormed the field and attacked fans of their opponents.

With knives, swords, clubs, stones, bottles, and fireworks.

in a typical football game, there's 12 minutes of total action if you get rid of the breaks between plays. Defenders are being more and more attacking in soccer which means that there are more than 4-6 players involved in a play.

You hear more riots, deaths, etc. for these reasons.

    1) Sheer hatred for rivals. Some of these rivalries make Yankees/Red Sox seem insanely tame in comparision.

    2) Racism. It's prevalent in soccer mostly out by Russia etc. FIFA is trying to punish clubs for their fans screaming racist chants. Unfortunately, this leads to a player walking off the pitch in protest or riots breaking out.

    3) There's more soccer games! You have EPL (Barclays), La Liga (Spain), France, Italy, Russia, Denmark, etc. There's bound to be more incidents due to there being 10x more professional games than baseball.

    4) Fans passion. Watch a rivalry game or go on youtube and look up crowds for soccer games. They make (most) american events seem like a church service. They are loud throughout the game, not just in periods where there team is doing well.

Omg! Not everyone likes the same sports with similar intensity?!?! Let's pointlessly argue!

    Professional sports > college sports
All can agree on that, right?

Time for the seventh inning stretch, time to join Harry Carry for a rousing rendition of, "Take me out to the ball game".... If that isn't your thing I guess you can chose not to sing. Same thing goes at a soccer game.

What makes all these games good is tradition, "the experience" and personal connections. They all have a different pace. I grew up playing baseball, basketball and football. My kids loves soccer and can't stand how slow baseball moves. After watching them play for 8+ years I enjoy watching soccer just as much as football but not quite as much as basketball. Baseball is fun to play but I can't watch it expect at the stadium. The ball game experience is great the game is sloooow.

So if you have never played the game and have no personal connections to it you have no reason to enjoy it. I get that. Do yourself a favor and realize that all the relationships experiences and history that makes one sport exciting to you makes other sports exciting for others. Ignorance of their ignorance is the plight of the ignorant. You are better than that Cubby.

The one thing I take out of the sad article from the OP is gratitude that we generally have rule of law and not mob rule.
