Sort of Friday OT: Best Cartoons Currently On Air?

Since I think a large portion of the population will be off Friday (not me, hooray ), it seemed to make more sense to do this today.

What are the best cartoons currently airing?

These can be cartoons strictly for adults, but I was thinking more about the cartoons that are for kids that you will sit and watch on your own even if no children are around.

    My picks:

    - The Looney Tunes Show - this is a new take on the old Looney Tunes stuff (I think it's on Cartoon Network), but it's got a pretty heavy underlying dose of sarcasm. Kristin Wiig is on it every episode, and the Daffy character is just an hilarious jerk.

    - Gravity Falls - not very well known, it's on the Disney Channel. Very clever - Kristen Schaal (from Flight of the Conchords) and Linda Cardellini (from Freaks & Geeks) are both on the show, and it's also got layers for adults.

    - Phineas & Ferb - probably lower on the list for me, but it's very clever. Doofenschmirtz is always enjoyable.

    For adult cartoons:

    - Archer (obvious)

    - Venture Brothers (obvious)

I'm not as familiar with the current set as my son is 15 now and doesn't watch many.

Yeah, you definitely don't get exposed to as many cartoons (unless you already frequent the Cartoon Network) with older kids around. I think that, with your sense of humor, that you'd enjoy most of those. :)

I have only ever seen one episode of Squidbillies, years ago - I couldn't figure out when it was actually on! The Adult Swim stuff has a crazy schedule.

It's really too bad ATHF dropped off so badly around the time of the movie. That used to be something we watched regularly.

Since I don't have any new ones, my old favorites were Courage the Cowardly Dog, Johnny Bravo, Spongebob and Powerpuff Girls.

I thought that I read somewhere that they were going to redo Powerpuff Girls. Or maybe they're just re-airing it on HUB or something?

    Agree with all of those.

Venture Brothers is quite possibly the best written show on television, animated or not. McCulloch and Hammer work so well together both in their writing and their vocal performances. The only down side is the animation time. It takes too long for new seasons to come out.

Re: Sort of Friday OT: Best Cartoons Currently On Air?

No kids, so can't comment on those.

I'd say Archer is probably the best one at this time.

In the past, I would have said Southpark. However, I think they are trying too hard with a lot of things. They still have the occasional awesome episode, but there are quite a few that aren't so good.

Also, Family Guy - the early seasons were great, but later seasons have also suffered like Southpark.

It really is an insanely long time between seasons - I guess the nice thing is that they don't have to worry about the characters aging.

Yeah, I really enjoyed Family Guy the first time around, but really haven't since, it tries too hard. Same with SP - it's kind of one note, and sometimes they have to overreach to do it.

that's doubly funny because Hank and Dean are both clones who have been kept in a state of perpetual boyhood for who knows how long.

ughh, I hate that show. I get that it's for kids, and my daughter loves it, but it's dumb even by kids show standards.
