Need your opinions - Gamers and Graphic Designers

In an attempt to promote the arts with middle schoolers and high schoolers for a local arts center, we have come up with a potential idea and would like your opinions.

Concept: Host an Xbox gaming tournament at the art center. Kids and teens only. That is the hook to get them in the door.

While trying to show the art behind the gaming, bring in an artist or graphic designers to talk about 3D Modeling and the design graphics. We know an artist from Kansas City who helped design the characters for different games including Gears of War. We are also discussing bringing in a graphic designer to show the art behind the architectural backgrounds which make the games come to life.

During a couple of designed game breaks give a 15-20 min overview from each artist/designer.

We will borrow the TVs and XBox console/controller/games. We will have a projector for the presentations, which we will use this also for the championship rounds.

    Questions:
    - Do you think there would be interest?

    - What game(s) would you choose?

    - Do you think having a sports game (ie. Madden) and shooter game (Halo) tournaments could be run simultaneously?

    - What could we charge for an entry fee?

    - Do you know anyone who may be potential presenters or have connections to this industry?

    - Is there anything else we will need to consider?

    Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a pretty solid idea. I'd make sure to temper expectations though. I've done things where we've hosted groups of high school students on job shadowing events at my firm who are interested in entering the field I'm in and it's always a little jarring how quiet, intrinsic, and uninterested they seem. A very small percentage seem interested and engaged. I imagine for middle schoolers it'd be even worse.

Going with Madden and a shooter game sounds like a good idea. I have no clue what shooter game would be a good choice. Is your KC artist a student/graduate/teacher at KCAI (Kansas City Art Institute)? They have a game design program and it's a really excellent school.

Would there be any way to have the kids do an actual hands-on activity related to designing a character or something? I think pulling them in the with the Xbox/games/tournament would work, but if the educational aspect of it is someone at the front of the room talking at them with a PowerPoint presentation, it might fall flat. Getting them involved with actually EXPERIENCING a little bit of the art in game design would probably be much more effective.

I don't really have constructive input, but that is an awesome idea. Are 26 year-olds invited?

I would think about trying to bring in some iPhone App designers to speak. Kids love their gadgets these days, and it would probably spark a lot of interest out of the kiddos. Especially when you can talk about examples like the 17 yr old kid that had his app purchased by Yahoo for 30 mil (Yahoo Buys Summly, 17-Year-Old Nick D'Aloisio's News Summarization App)

My son (will be a freshman) would love something like this. I think a good balance of game playing and hands on design work would be great.

Re: Need your opinions - Gamers and Graphic Designers

Gonzo, our targeted artist did earn his a BFA in illustration at The Kansas City Art Institute. Good call! I don't foresee us doing a formal powerpoint as we would lose them quickly. We have to capture their attention for the 15-20 min (max). We are trying to figure out some mini-projects for kids who get knocked out of the tourney early.

CYber, Great idea...do you know of any iphone app designers?

CP, It was discussed doing an adult tourney as well, but were unsure the level of interest for the artistic side of it. We may even do a Wii tourney for adults simultaneously.

    Ideas welcome...

Re: Need your opinions - Gamers and Graphic Designers

I know you are doing this for the art and graphics side of things, but as a programmer myself, I think it would be a good opportunity to talk about the programming behind games as well. Whenever I am playing games now, I think about the code that would need to be written to create certain aspects of the game. Would be interesting to show how they work together to produce the product on the screen.
