It hadn't occurred to me before how big the Drake Relays probably are for our track program when it comes to recruiting.

I think the team is very excited; especially the guys. This change is going propel the teams back to the NCAA Championship level that Bergan had the program.

Great hire. I'm not a huge track guy but hiring someone with Oregon Track and Field and XC coach on his resume seems pretty huge to me.

    Re: New Track Coach hired

Not a follower of the track and cross country programs (except runners at the level of Saina and Uhl....), but hiring a 5 time nat'l champion away from Boomer seems like a good direction to go.

    Re: New Track Coach hired

    From his OU bio:

"In the six years under Smith’s guidance, six individual NCAA champions have been crowned, 49 of the program’s individual event or relay records have been broken, 98 NCAA All-America honors have been earned and 46 Big 12 titles have been won in individual or relay events along with the 2007 (outdoor) and 2010 (indoor) Big 12 men’s conference titles."

Also, according to the OU site, he has coached a total of 281 All-Americans. Not bad.

    Re: New Track Coach hired

According to a post on this site, ISU's budget is $300,000 less than OU's, and Martin Smith was paid $180,000 there, compared to Ihmels' $110,000. I doubt Smith would come to Ames without a nice raise, and I'd bet our T/F budget goes way up too. 2013 College Coaching Positions Open(ing)
