Pollard takes one last (lighthearted) shot at Iowa

The Register has a pretty good article about the idea of moving the ISU-UI game to later in the season, and what the two AD's have to say about it. It's a decent read.

    http://www.desmoinesregister.com/app...0912012&lead=1

The end of the story contains these gems from Pollard. Read on:

The athletic directors also jabbed jokingly at each other, predicting victory this weekend.

Pollard noted that he brought the Cy-Hawk Trophy to the breakfast meeting as a courtesy to Barta, who only recently took over the Iowa athletic director’s post after replacing Bob Bowlsby.

“I thought Gary should have an opportunity to see it and touch it,” Pollard said. “I don’t think he is going to get much more than that for a while.”

Pollard said he recently got a call from Cedar Rapids police about traffic jams near the billboard he rented, showing Iowa State players carrying off the Cy-Hawk Trophy after the Cyclones won 23-3 last season at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. The sign, which will come down on Thursday, reads: “It’s a Cyclone State.”

“I asked if the traffic jam was being caused by Cyclone fans, but the police said that it was Hawkeye fans. They said that the Hawkeye fans had to slow down or stop to read it,” Pollard said.

Naturally, Barta responds with some lame comment about how Iowa's nickname is still the Hawkeye State. Nice work, JP!

    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

I *heart* JP. It can never be said enough! I shall scream it from the top of Kinnick stadium after an ISU victory on Saturday.

    Thanks for the info Ornryactor!

You know, I really wish the game was at the end of the year. It was awesome in 2001 when we beat them at the end of the season, the game had so much riding on it. Plus, teams could focus on random teams gonig in to big 12 play and it wouldn't be such a distraction early on in the year.

That is the typical lame-brained squawkeye comeback.

was this a setup? I would think so. But after living in CR for 20 years, I could see the Police Chief calling..... any ideas on that?

either way it was a hularious press conference.

Re: Pollard takes one last (lighthearted) shot at Iowa

I thought the JP quotes in the DM Reg were hilarious. Compared to the stick in the mud athletic directors that we have had in recent memories Jp is, as my grandma used to say, "A Hoot". I've said it before and I'll say it again, JP is a welcomed breath of fresh air to ISU athletics.

    Go Clones!

Re: Pollard takes one last (lighthearted) shot at Iowa

Jamie Pollard's quips often remind me of Johnny Orr and the things he would say to and about the Hawks. Some of the things Johnny said were absolutely hilarious and have endeared him to the Iowa State faithful forever.

I hope Jamie keeps it up and will one day be seen with the same reverence as Coach Orr. At the end of a long career in Ames, I hope that Jamie will also say..."the best thing I ever did was come to Iowa State."

Pollard for President. I've never seen this much hype in Cyclones country. Not just football, but the entire ISU athletic dept! Go State!
