    Slim is Gone

Country singer Slim Whitman dies at age 90, family says | The Salt Lake Tribune

Country singer Slim Whitman, the high-pitched yodeler who sold millions of records through ever-present TV ads in the 1980s and 1990s and whose song saved the world in the film comedy "Mars Attacks!," died Wednesday at a Florida hospital. He was 90.

Same here. Would've figured he checked out about thirty years ago. His music genre certainly did.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I remember years ago when they started the Iowa lottery. KGGO did a spoof commercial with Slim Whitman and Mother Theresa promoting the new Iowa lottery because your chances of winning were Slim and nun. The lottery commision was not amused.

They say country music speaks to the heart. Unfortunately, it has to go through your ears to get there.

I remember that. Funny as all hell.

I'm also old enough to remember people actually listening to Slim. My grandmother had one of those BIG console radios with the record player AND an 8-track, and she had Slim's Greatest Hits along with several other "choice" selections.

RIP Slim. When you get to "Not-Quite Rock & Roll Heaven", say hello to Boxcar Willie for me.

Slim had some legit musical and voice talents. RIP
.........and he was a big influence on Andy Kaufman!

    Re: Slim is Gone

I, too, was surprised to see he just died. I thought he died 20 years ago or so.

I guess his publicist hadn't doing a very good job lately.

    .

He was an influence on George Harrison and Paul McCartney too. McCartney saw Whitman on British t.v. playing his guilar left handed and thought to himself that's it and started playing the guitar just like Slim.

    Re: Slim is Gone

Those commercials were...pervasive, and I understand he sold even more albums in Europe.
