    Rental Car Europe

Anybody rented one over the pond before? We're heading to Germany in less than a month and want to get one locked in fairly soon. Expedia had a lot of different options. Not sure if all the extra insurance options are needed? Any suggestions on outfits to rent from?

We rented from auto europe. We didn't have any problems. Check with your insurance agent to see if you have any coverage on overseas rentals.

I've used Avis twice in Germany and was pleased both times although I did end up with some strange charge to my AMEX card the second time. Fortunately AMEX took care of disputing that for me but that may have been because it was a Corporate account.

Also watch out for speeding cameras. I don't think they're always marked.

    Re: Rental Car Europe

I've rented in Italy multiple times, France, and Ireland. GPS yes and the smaller the car the better. I'd recommend a VW Golf diesel or something similar. When I was in Ireland they upgraded me to a larger car for free, which was actually worse. Manuals are usually a lot cheaper.

    Re: Rental Car Europe

Try Sixt auto rental. I have used them in England and set up my parents with them in France. Found them to be much cheaper. Service is a bit no frills at the airport but the cars were good. While a small car is better, make sure it fits your luggage. We had trouble with that. Keep in mind a "big" SUV there is a Honda CRV.....
    Have a great trip

    Re: Rental Car Europe

Ended up renting a Golf Diesel through Sixt. They were very easy to work with. Really liked the car. It only had about 300 miles on it so pretty much new. 5 speed transmission and I figure we averaged about 45 MPG mostly driving 80 to 90 MPH on the German A****ahn. Rode very nice and did not feel like a small car. It had a pretty advanced radar system when driving in tight areas. Once I got used to it, really through it was a superior system to the cameras we have here. Paid extra for a navigation unit and was worth ever penny. Will not travel Europe again with out one of those. The car can carry 4 comfortably with room in back for 2 suit cases.
