USA Today 2013 Iowa State Preview

College football countdown | No. 87: Iowa State

    Most interesting part to me.

The record was the same six wins, three in Big 12 play, seven losses but there were two noticeable differences between ISU's 2011 and 2012 seasons. Item one: In 2011, five of ISU's six wins came by six points or less; last season, five of the Cyclones' six wins came by 14 or more points. Item two: In 2011, six of the seven losses came by at least 14 points; last fall, five of ISU's seven losses came by 15 points or less.
I'd say this is great evidence showing the improvement of the team under Rhoads.

Pretty thorough and well thought out. However, even though the author tells himself not to pick against us, he still predicts only 5 wins.

Surprised he didn't mention Coach K in the midst of the references to the Pistol.

I thought 5 wins is on the high side of national predictions though. Most seem to be in the 3-4 camp.

The Cyclones have topped OU only once since 1962.
Can we please beat OU sometime in the near future?!?

That was a fascinating bit of analysis. ISU did have some sneaky good stats last year. He also hammered the Cyclones pretty good regarding lack of offensive consistency and excessive turnovers. While painful, I guess those are clean shots. At the same time, for me, that also brings to light what a huge opportunity Sam Richardson has in front of him. By turning in a consistent, if otherwise non-descript season, Sam's play can eliminate the 2 factors that have straightjacketed this team in the Rhoads era. Then the offense goes from liability to asset, and that 9-3 dreams season looks to be in play. Hey, its addition by subtraction, and a little something to spike that summer Kool-Aide!

    5-70-2 against OU all-time.

I haven't been able to find a more lopsided head to head record in all of sports. Even Rice has been more successful against Texas than we have been against OU.

    Makes me sick.

And Walden may have been a suspended kicker away from beating them in Ames as well. How the hell do you NOT have at least 2 guys that can make extra points? Uh, wait....never mind......

Re: USA Today 2013 Iowa State Preview

Nice unbiased assessment, but 87? What are there, like 107 FBS Schools? Even if they don't predict 6 or 7 wins, I think we deserve to be the low 70's just based on competition.

Yes, this is my first post...cherry busted.

To give some stomach-churning historical perspective to the lopsided nature, using the reliable "...hasn't won since the (X) administration...": The last time ISU beat OU in Ames came in 1960. Not only was JFK still alive, he hadn't even been elected yet. (game was on Nov. 5, election Nov. 8)

Plus: Herbert Hoover was still alive, and Barack Obama wasn't born yet.

    Others:
*Groundbreaking for JTS was almost 13 years away.
*Ford Mustang was still about four years away from introduction.
*Paul McCartney and George Harrison were still teenagers ... and their little group had been known as The Beatles for only 3 months.

Many more we could cite, but this'll suffice for now. ()

What transfer is he talking about in the quarterback section?

It was an okay ISU team, and OU was down, way way down, in the 90s.

I was wondering that too. I guess I assumed he meant was "1 of the 4 is obviously going to leave to play somewhere else" but maybe there is somebody who has already indicated they are leaving after this season.
