    Sirens going off in Indianola

Sounds like a cat dying. Anyway, all I can tell is that we're under a thunderstorm warning

I'd assume it's for straight line winds. Ed is not on channel 13 at the moment so definitely no tornado

That's what we figured. Not much going on but a steady rain. Back to bed

If they're going to turn on the sirens for high winds they need to make it a different noise. I am not fazed by high winds.

It was a slower warbled sound, like they were broken. Not sure if that was intentional. They went off four times, and I don't think I lost a single leaf off my tree.

I heard them but agree, there was no need for the sirens. We were just getting back from the Superman movie and at first I couldn't figure out what I heard. Unless I need to take cover don't use the sirens.

Re: Sirens going off in Indianola

Technically they are outdoor warning sirens used for high winds as well as tornadoes. If you are in the CR area their main purpose is to warn if you need to evacuate if something goes wrong at the DAEC.

My main point is they are for more than just tornadoes and only meant to warn you if you are outside.

If you're outside (which is what the OUTDOOR warning sirens are for) straight lines winds can be just as damaging as a EF 0-1 tornado.

I'm aware. Just curious why they went off and why it was several times. I read online that 60 mph winds were reported to our west, but we had little other than rain. Maybe the worst part was north or south of town.

Only the common idiot would stand outside in any weather. I guess that's who they're directed for.

I could hear something weird last night until just after midnight. I live near the DSM airport, so I'm not to far into Polk County, but it sounded like there was a lone siren somewhere going off.

It was kind of strange, just a steady, higher pitched sound...seemed like it might be a bit in the distance (I've never actually heard the sirens from my home since I'm always at work) but also never changed pitch or volume.

The duration seemed longer than I've ever heard any siren go for as well, so I'm completely confused as to what it was.

And none of the warnings last night were for 70mph winds, so that technically should rule out the straight-line wind explanation.

edit: I suppose what I heard possibly could have been a UPS jet sitting on the runway with its *** aimed our direction waiting for a window to get out.
