    FIFA Confederations Cup

I'm a sucker for pretty much any international soccer competition that involves quality squads & this fits the bill. I know it doesn't really mean all that much in the grand scheme of things, and the US is not involved, but I'm still excited for some of these matches.

The first match is tomorrow (Saturday), Brazil vs. Japan, followed by 2 matches on Sunday, Mexico vs. Italy and Spain vs. Uruguay. I believe all of the matches are being televised on ESPN.

Why isn't the US involved? too close to the qualifying games? I remember 4 years ago when they almost punked Brazil.

gold cup winner is invited to it. Mexico won so it's them.

The teams playing in the confederations cup are those winners of the most recent confederation tournaments (UEFA, CONCACAF, AFC, OFC etc.) Mexico won the last gold cup (CONCACAF's tournanament) so they're our representative

The Brazil result was disappointing, but don't forget one of the best moments in US Soccer history.

I think the day we lost to Brazil is when Deuce became my favorite player. To see him crying at the award ceremony let you know how much he wanted that, and I respect him so much for that.

    Re: FIFA Confederations Cup

This will be an interesting tournament, Brazil is so young. And it will be interesting to see Tahiti play against the giants. Too bad the US isn't involved, I think playing in the last Confederation's Cup really benefitted the US in the world cup in South Africa. Getting experience and having success against the world's best instilled a lot of confidence in the team.

So wrong. 1989 Paul Caliguri. THE next momonet...

As far as depth goes though, the combination of White, Woodbury, Olaseni, Basabe, and Uthoff is much better than Niang, Ejim, Edozie, Gibson. Not because of the top 2, but because of the next 2 or 3. -DeanVogs

    Re: FIFA Confederations Cup

Mexico has struggled to score lately, but man, Corona is playing well right now. He's already made 2 saves (one including a remarkable recovery and clearance) to keep the match scoreless.

And Guardado just puts one off the crossbar.

Our showing at the Confed Cup in '09 is probably the reason why Bradley kept his job as long as he did. There was a lot of noise to have him replaced before the Confed Cup, and some of that noise died down at least until after the horrid showing at the World Cup.

Spain is really owning Uruguay right now - this game could easily be 3-0 and it's only 15 minutes in.
