    Phil Steele is ...

Phil Steele 2013 is finally hitting the stands. Won’t give away too much, but here is a practice question sure for this year’s CFB fanatic certification exam:

Phil Steele is : (choose the best answer)

    A) Still bitter that ISU fired Dan McCarney in '05
    B) Not Samantha Steele Ponder's uncle
    C) A big toad for picking ISU tied with KU for last in the Big 12
    D) All of the above

And yet once again, he is predictable and wrong. I quit reading Athlon And Steele years ago (Athlon decades ago).

I'm surprised anyone actually reads/buys any of these things. I have literally never seen anyone pick up one of these magazines. I mean, what is this, 1997?!?

If we were tied for first place with KU and in the top 15 in February, he would probably have us at the last 4 in with "work to do"....

Where is Rodney Dangerfield when you need him???

Steele picked Oklahoma State to finish #8 in the nation. We're loving him in Stillwater.

    Re: Phil Steele is ...

I agree on all of the above, but he IS still bitter about McCarney. I know Mac was great to work with for the press, but some people need to let it go. The guys on 1620 Omaha are STILL upset about it and won't hardly give CPR any credit at all. They loved Mac because he was the anti-Nebraska coach, who basically stonewalled them. Phil Steele seems to have a similar attitude, even though CPR has exceeded his predictions every single year he has been at ISU. Thing is, what did Mac really do to deserve all this loyalty other than be easy to work with? It pisses me off that someone from outside the fanbase seems to think that they can tell US that we should just be happy with mediocre and not shoot for something better. That's the crux of the whole thing...we're just lowly Iowa State and we should never expect anything better than a "good guy" coach who can occasionally get us to bowls.

    Re: Phil Steele is ...

Not sure why you guys always get so butthurt over this. Phil Steele is annually regarded as one of the best, even if we don't like what he has to say. He, like others, use the past as a predictor of the future. And we have been a long-time lower level team in the Big 12. By the way, I went back and here is how he has predicted us versus where we finished:

    2012: Predicted 9th, finished 9th
    2011: Predicted 9th, finished 8th
2010: Predicted last (6th) in north, finished 4th in north
2009: Predicted last (6th) in north, finished 4th in north
2008: Predicted last in north, finished last in north
2007: Predicted last in north, finished last in north

Looks pretty accurate to me. 2009-2010 were hugely overacheiving years, based on the misery that was 2007-2008. Don't think a lot of predictors, including those on this board, would have predicted us a lot higher than last in the north those years.

Did you read how well Steele predictions went in his own magazine? In my experience about 90% of the pages are filled with self-congratulatory statements about how he picked Alabama to win the SEC last year, etc.

Agree. People will keep picking us to finish at the bottom until we stop finishing at the bottom.

I bought the Athlon's one just because James White is on it. I buy Iowa State stuff, I'm that type of fan.
