    Iowa Cyclones

We've all heard the guys on television say this from time to time. But I'm a little more bothered by the email I got from the Visions magazine staff. I'm not bothered with the association to the Hawks, I just hate the way Iowa Cyclones sounds. Not sure why...

Do you believe that they are just meaning Cyclones that live in Iowa? Or is the Visions magazine farmed out and nobody proofed?

    Dear Iowa Cyclone,

VISIONS Across America is coming home! After two years of coast-to-coast travel, photographing and interviewing Iowa State graduates, it’s time to come back to Iowa to tell YOUR story.

Editor Carole Gieseke and photographer Jim Heemstra will end their 50-state journey in Iowa in October 2013. They are now seeking your input for stories that capture the heart of Iowa State.

Did you grow up in Iowa, attend Iowa State, move away from the Midwest – and then return? Did you grow up outside the state but settle here after graduation? Are you a lifelong Iowan?

We want to hear from you! Tell us about your life: your career, your community involvement, your family. What are you passionate about? Why have you chosen to live in Iowa? What makes this state special? What makes YOU special?

More than 91,000 Iowa State alumni make their homes in the state of Iowa. ONLY ONE will be chosen to be featured in the special VISIONS Across America issue of VISIONS magazine published next spring. Who will it be?

Send your stories (or nominate other Iowans) to Carole Gieseke atcgieseke@iastate.edu by July 31.

We can’t wait to hear your stories! Go, Cyclones!

    The VISIONS magazine staff

P.S. Want to read more about the VISIONS Across America project? Visit ourwebsite to post your own stories for everyone to see and to read stories posted by other alumni. There’s a special page for each state. And be sure to read our VISIONS Across America blog featuring alumni profiles and travel stories.

    Re: Iowa Cyclones

Judging by the first couple lines of the letter, I believe they mean "Cyclone who lives in Iowa," attempting to address the alumni in Iowa.

    Re: Iowa Cyclones

The fact that most of the email is based around geographical location I'm going to assume that the use of "Iowa" was also intended to be geographical.

Agree w/ FDW above. Just a form greeting - it wouldn't bother anyone with any other state, I don't think. "California Cyclone" or "Vermont Cyclone" - we're all sure what they are talking about there.

    Agree with respondents.

I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said to the Lord,
“You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. During the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”
“Because,” says the Lord, “Sandpeople always ride single-file, to hide their numbers.”

I agree this is just geography based, but I do not like it.

I'd prefer just Dear Cyclone, for those in Iowa this letter is going to.

    Yeah, that's an over-reaction.

Or an angry screed hand scribed on a brick and delivered via the window of the Visions office.

    Re: Iowa Cyclones

Ha, I do seem too sensitive apparently. After the first couple respondents saying the same thing I got that. What's odd is that I'm not even a hawk hater, so it's odd that it bothers me. And I thought I put in my OP that I understood that it could be in context. Just sounds weird. I'll make sure that all the right parties hear from me on this abomination.
