Who are some guys that should be added?

I know there are always guys developing and will surprise us and work their way into the lineup. Guys likes the Swallas', Esaias, Powell, Kreiger, Paulson, etc

If Woiwor can't make 157, It looks like 157 might be needed. The Swallas, Paulson, White would be around this weight.

Is Meeks done with 133? I thought he only was having trouble making weight because he let his diet lapse between semesters.

I really wish we could get G. Moreno and Goettl both in the lineup

    Re: Future lineups and recruiting

It sounds like John is done with 133. I think with Earl Hall at Iowa State, it made more sense to bump John to 141 and keep Earl at 133. But John is planning on Redshirting this year.

Also sounds like Gabe and Luke will compete for 149 and Dakota Bauer and Shayden at 141. At least to start the season.

    Re: Future lineups and recruiting

Getting Nicholson for next year is nice. He majored Molina in the dual so I assume he'll probably have the 157 spot as long as he's healthy. If he can get back to the form he was in as a sophomore he should be able to score us a handful of points at NCAAs. I like Molina but I think that he would also benefit from having a year to focus purely on improving his technique without having to worry about weight management and competitions.

Ideally Logan should be at 165 next year, but that won't happen with a healthy Michael Moreno

    Re: Future lineups and recruiting

So basically for next year we're looking at:

    2013-14
125 - Likely qualifier, might score us some points in OKC
    133 - Bit of a question mark
    141 - Likely .500 guy
149 - Likely qualifier, might score us some points in OKC
157 - Likely qualifier, should score us some points in OKC
165 - Likely high AA, outside chance at a finalist
    174 - Likely R12 or AA
    184 - Likely R12 or AA
197 - Likely High AA, possible finalist
    Hwt - Huge question mark

I heard Quean has been training with some MMA guys and got his weight down to 293. He is back in Ames now. I am excited to see him on the mat. He could be a big surprise for us, if he can maintain his weight.

If he makes the lineup, it sounds like he'll be the biggest(heaviest) heavyweight we've had in awhile.

Thank you Judoka and Buf for your insight. I don't understand Meeks redshirting. Why now? Should have last year.

Pretty sure this was done to help KJ. He had to know he was expected to show some improvement, and that meant being stronger top to bottom across all weights. Ideally, Meeks would have RS, but now with some of the OTC kids here, and in the mix at those weights, he will have the chance to RS, plus should get more out of his workout partners in the room

In retrospect not redshirting him made sense in November. He was likely doing very well against Finch and Goettl in the room, who were returning NCAA qualifiers (little did we know at the time they would have a sophomore slump), and at the testing the waters open tournament he beat a guy who was fairly highly ranked and wrestled a very close match against a guy who was expected to AA, and our other options at 133 were not very good. So while I think he should have redshirted anyways, I can understand what the coaches were thinking when they pulled his redshirt.

Hopefully with a redshirt this year he can improve his defense and his ability to get out from bottom. I haven't given up on him yet.

I agree with this. The coaches probably saw Meeks as ready based on practice and those open tourney matches.

While last year may have been a waste, Redshirting now will allow Meeks to grow and become stronger. I still like Meeks and I think he will have 3 good years starting in 2014.
