Re: Bowlsby out to strengthen the Big 12

Glad to see we're working on branding. A ten team league with 12 in it's name ****ing stupid.

    Also, from the article...

Bowlsby missed the ugliest parts. Former Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe, who fended off the first incursion by Larry Scott and his Pacific raiders by convincing the league's television partners to pay the same amount for 10 schools' inventory that they paid for 12, had his job ritually sacrificed to the realignment gods in 2011. That year, some of the finer points of The Longhorn Network being created by Texas drove Texas A&M officials over the edge. They bolted for the SEC, and Missouri followed. Beebe was canned, and then Neinas managed to make the remaining schools agree to the equal revenue sharing and Grant of Rights deals that Beebe had been touting at least a year before Scott tried to swipe half the league. Bowlsby arrived as schools were forging a new bond as (more, but certainly not completely) equal partners. This past fall, they began enjoying the spoils of two new media rights contracts. On Jan. 1, 2015, the Big 12 will team with the SEC to stage the Sugar Bowl using a new bowl business model that gives the leagues all of the power and most of the money. "Trust is growing with each passing activity we undertake," said Bowlsby, who served as the athletic director at Iowa and Stanford before coming to the Big 12. "With each business venture, with each collaboration, some of the scar tissue is being reduced and nerves aren't quite as close to the surface."

The bolded seems to indicate that Dan Beebe wasn't nearly as inept as I thought. What hung up the GoR back then?

Interesting to see we are keeping the Sugar Bowl name but also keeping the "Champion's Bowl" structure of cutting out the middle man so the two conferences manage and profit from the bowl. Best of both worlds. Some on here had said "Sugar is Champions" but I was never positive we retained the positive things about the Bowl. If it's a runaway success I wonder if the Big Ten/Pac 12 will pressure for a similar relationship with the Rose. It also gives us a leg up on the ACC in that they have nothing to match this as long as the other four leagues remained locked in two agreements to try to get their best available to meet.

Beebe was a decent businessman dealing with horrible egos (Osborne, Dodds, BowTie, Bowen). However, he was not a good public communicator by any means, which makes one look inept in the eyes of the public, and probably cost him respect among the Big 12 ADs and Presidents. I've always felt (and posted here) that more blame was usually hoisted on him than he really deserved.

As the article says, Beebe convinced the TV partners to pay the same for the inventory of ten schools as they were paying for 12 schools. That doesn't exactly seem trivial. If he had not been able to to that, the Big 12 would be gone, and who knows where ISU would be now.

On a PR level he failed to keep the conference out ahead of the story, but by and large I thin you are right. The amount of sway the commissioner holds over these schools is pretty small.

Re: Bowlsby out to strengthen the Big 12

I don't care what the conference logo is, keep the roman numerals whatever, but decide on the logo and hand down severe punishment to any conference member that feels like defacing it with their own schools name/logo.

Let teams color it however they want like the B1G and SEC have done, but seeing the schools name or the giant Longhorn on top of the conference logo just screams conference instability.

    Great read.

Seems like further proof that the people who look at the Big 12 and see instability are seeing what they want to see.

Beebe was a scapegoat. About the only thing he could be blamed for is not convincing people the same things Neinas convinced them of later. That said, he didn't have to deal with TO and aTm and their egos either. I don't think Beebe had a chance.

Re: Bowlsby out to strengthen the Big 12

Agree with others on Beebe. I don't know if anyone could have managed the collective, competing egos of Dodds, Osborne, and Aggy. As was said many times during the realignment fiasco, ADs can only do what their schools let them.

Nebraska, UT, A&M, and OU fought firmly against equal revenue sharing. Rather than give into each other (I'm speaking of UT and Nebraska in particular here) they A) bolted for a league that DID have it, and B) agreed to it after the complainer was gone.

Ego got in the way of business, plain and simple. When parties started behaving irrationally, good luck trying to make anything of it.
