    Possible NCAA split?

Will the "haves" of the NCAA (football)cause it to split from the rest of the college sports world. And what would the basketball world do? Kind of a rehashed topic in the DM Rag from hawgeyecentral. An NCAA split because of football? Don’t rule it out | Hawk Central

Won't happen. The tax guy would be drooling over the possibility and that's exactly why it won't happen.

    Re: Possible NCAA split?

It won't happen, mainly because no matter how powerful your football program becomes, in order to generate revenue you need to play other teams. Even the defending national champion wouldn't be able to fill every seat in their stadium by playing a series of 8 instrasquad scrimmages every year.

Unless the "splitters" take off with enough teams to provide their own league play, they'll never get enough games to make it work long term.

"You want to play our team next year? Fine. Our going rate for non-NCAA games is $5 million. We're going to need that paid in cash, up-front."

    Re: Possible NCAA split?

More than likely the potential splitting teams will use it as leverage to enact changes. Having another division of the big schools might make some sense, honestly I-A has gotten a bit bigger than it probably should have (im not sure why a lot of the attendance requirements have been removed)

Casual fan doesn't even know that something like 10-14 teams are scheduled or have recently been bumped from FCS to FBS recently. Some have even been begged to be bumped up and turned it down. How many college football fans are aware Old Dominion football is coming into CUSA? That's your answer about why a division split may make sense. The major conferences and maybe MWC/Big East leftovers playing to get into this 4 or 8 team playoff makes sense. Old Dominion getting bumped up for it and Sun Belt bumping up all sorts of teams to stay alive do not belong in that post season system.

Sun Belt, CUSA and MAC may make sense in this postseason system is if we go to a 16 team playoff with auto bids but I think that would damage the game and not be fair to power conferences. A 32 team playoff could be fair to everyone but would severely dilute regular season drama and cash cow the game has grown to depend on.

    Re: Possible NCAA split?

At some level there is already a major split in the way that teams are treated by the NCAA. Iowa State make a couple dozen undocumented calls and the local media reports it as a major NCAA violation. Meanwhile teams in the SEC basically do not follow the rules at all (Cam Newton, etc.), using the threat of leaving the NCAA as a tool to do whatever they want. When was the last time an SEC school actually had a violation, or had someone not get into school because of grades?

There would be more than 12 teams in the "elite" division, so not sure where you are coming from with this opinion.

    Re: Possible NCAA split?

I am surprised there isn't more serious talk of big time football programs leaving the NCAA.
