    Theo: FIX THE BULLPEN!!!!

I know today's loss is more on Edwin Jackson's lousy pitching, but Carlos Marmol's THREE 8th inning walks just fired up my frustration with the Cubs' bullpen again.

Chicago has three starters with ERA's under 3.00: Wood, Feldman, and Samardzija. Only three other teams in all of baseball can also claim that feat: St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Washington. All three of those clubs are either first or second in their divisions. The Cubs are buried in fourth, 11 games out of second.

Meanwhile, the bullpen has an ERA of 4.79, which gets even worse if you remove James Russell's 1.29 and Kevin Gregg's .059. Marmol, despite posting horrendous numbers (5.64 ERA, 1.84 WHIP) has more IP than any pitcher in the bullpen right now. He and Shawn Camp are two of just 17 relievers with at least 10 IP and a WHIP of 1.84 or worse. And the Cubs have three relievers (Marmol, Camp, and Hector Rondon) among the bottom 31 pitchers (min: 10 IP) in ERA. As a point of reference for those stats: There are 222 relievers who have logged at least 10 IP this year. Chicago has three relievers in the bottom 13.9% in ERA, and two in the bottom 7.7%.

Oh, and did I mention that the Cubs have lost EIGHTEEN GAMES by two runs or fewer this year?

Seriously, is it that hard to figure out that the bullpen needs major help? It's not like it's exceptionally hard to find a decent middle reliever. The team hardly NEEDS another two or three Russells in the pen (although that would be fantastic to have). Hell, it'd be a ******* cakewalk to find people better than what we've been throwing out there so far (remember, somebody in the 15th percentile would be an IMPROVEMENT at this point).

But no, we're too busy designating guys like Michael Bowden (the second-best middle reliever on the roster, with a 3.78 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP in 16.2 IP) for assignment in AAA to make room for Garza, rather than dumping somebody like Camp, Marmol, Rondon or even Jackson to accomplish that.

When your bullpen absolutely blows, and you're losing a **** ton of close games, you don't keep your horrible relievers and get rid of one of the three decent-to-great ones you have.

I'd be more content with the losing if it were simply because the team sucked all around. But when everything else about this team really isn't that bad, and the team is 13.5 games out of first by June 3, I'm going to get pretty upset. It shouldn't take much to fix the issue, but so far it seems that the front office has little interest in making moves to do so.

Yeah, the bullpen is killing the Cubs. Before it was the bullpen and lack of offense, but the offense has picked up as the weather has warmed. What gets me, is that the Cubs stick with Marmol about 2 batters too many, and I cant understand it. Last night he gives up a walk, a double, a walk, a grand slam, and a walk before they finally pull him.

    Re: Theo: FIX THE BULLPEN!!!!

The bullpen is bad all around but Dale is terrible at managing it. Villanueva should of pitched the 8th last night after only throwing 2 pitches in the 7th.

I just don't get how bad he can be at putting the right guys in the right spots to succeed. You'd think he'd learn by now that you don't put Marmol in the game in a high leverage situation. Ever.

WHY DO YOU PEOPLE CONTINUE TO USE THAT NAME??

I like to assume that we can ignore him and he'll go away.

    Re: Theo: FIX THE BULLPEN!!!!

I think Sveum has been told by management to try to find a way to increase Marmol's trade value so they can trade him to some unsuspecting franchise near the trade deadline. Problem is, Marmol just sucks so bad now that there is no way to make him look better to prospective trading partners. There just isn't.

And, as already mentioned, Sveum is just horrendous at managing the bullpen. Theo could have kept Quade, saved a **** ton of money and gotten the same results as this joker. Go to NSSB.com's message board to see all the griping about his bullpen management. It's just awful, and like the OP, I'm getting frustrated for the same reason: the rest of the team is performing at least at an average clip, if not above average, but the record in close games is killing them.

It's amazing to see the combination of bad bullpen management with a bad bullpen.

The only way I can see to increase that guy's trade value would be to sell him for parts. There might be some legal problems there, but after the last few years of the guy, I'm willing to try.

    Re: Theo: FIX THE BULLPEN!!!!

    Email TE.

Really, what can they do? Nobody's going to offer up any relievers for a trade until closer to the deadline when they know whether they've got a shot at the postseason. The free agent market consists of flotsam like Francisco Cordero, Miguel Batista, and Jason Isringhausen. That pretty much leaves A) calling up guys from the minors who might pitch decently, B) working with the existing crew and hoping they improve, C) milking more innings from the starters to alleviate pressure on the bullpen, or D) scoring more runs so that they're not in as many close games.

Or you could just become a Cardinals fan.

I'll admit, I have not actively watched baseball in quite a few years, but hasn't Marmol been the closer for like 7 years now? And he has always sucked? how is he still on the team?

He hasn't always sucked, just for the past year and a half or so. The problem for Marmol is that opposing batters now just go up to the plate and watch him throw (notice I didn't say "pitch") and wait for him to walk them. When Marmol first came into the bigs, batters were flailing away at his nasty slider, but now the scouting has caught up to him and batters know how to deal with his lack of control. He can't get anyone out with the slider anymore because he can't throw it for strikes consistently and the batters won't swing at it. They just stand and wait for him to throw fastballs and then he gets crushed.

He was the setup man for Kerry Wood and Kevin Gregg (and was pretty good) until a couple years ago, but he's been terrible since becoming the closer.

By the way, I'm talking about CARLOS MARMOL here.

    (that was for you, Erik)

How bad is this? As a Cubs fan I havn't watched a full game in two months. I don't even keep up with them daily on ESPN or anything. Screw it. I have no hope for them left. Yell at me all you want Cub fans. I don't give a ****. They suck, and I don't see them getting to the playoffs for another 5 years.
