    The Depaul stadium boondoggle

    The ‘lunacy’ of DePaul’s new arena*plan | One And One - SI.com

They could have been in the United Center for 10 years RENT FREE!

And they would be able to collect all ticket revenues!

    Something smells rotten.

The obvious answer would be to use the United Center.
At least at face value, it seems like that's the obvious way to go, and fiscally responsible.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

Welcome to Illinois politics. Daley turned Soldier Field into a flying saucer while they could have built a retractable roof stadium hosting the Bears, Super Bowls, Final Fours, etc. Would have been built beforehand, but could have been a great B1G Championship venue too.

If DePaul is going to build, they need to build about a 6-7,000 seat arena on campus. A lot of people with disposable income for tickets in that neighborhood and if the arena was closer, people might show up.

Yeah, but who wants to use mom's old minivan when you can buy your own brand new sports car??

    Re: The Depaul stadium boondoggle

This issue of whether to use tax dollars to help build a 10,000 seat arena for a private, Catholic school is one matter, but if I was DePaul I'd turn down the United Center's "offer" too. There'd be the issue of arena availability dates for games - and practice. DePaul would be way down the pecking order, and get the leftover dates and times after the main tenants, the Bulls and Blackhawks, claim theirs. And sure it's rent-free, but the university would still have operational costs.

I'm a DePaul fan give that my wife went to grad school there back when Q was there and they were playing good ball for a handful of years. Anyway, I totally understand the school wanting a stadium near campus similar to what Drake did 25 years ago, but hard to stomach a broke city in a broke state giving so much tax payer money to this project.

Nevermind $100 million. Think Ames will kick in $100 on the SEZ?

It's the land of dirty politics. Why help the taxpayers when you can line your friend's pockets? Why keep collecting the same, basically overhead free cash from parking meters when you can pay someone with taxpayer dollars to line their pockets instead? Chicago is truly one of the greatest cities in the world, but it's politics are ****ed so many ways, it truly is mind boggling that they are allowed to continue it.

Depaul wouldn't sell a respectable portion of the United Centers capacity imo. Also as people have said that neighborhood Depaul is in is full of young wealthy people who might casually go to games, but probably wouldn't travel and pay for parking to go to a game at the United Center, even though it's only 4 or 5 miles away.

There is a lot of cultural distance between the DePaul area and the United Center! It's not like you can just get on the train and go to Wrigley Field.

The green line gets you the closest you can possibly get to the United Center, and it's probably like a 3/4 mile walk through a **** neighborhood to get there. If my memory serves me correctly.

I really don't think that the argument is weather or not a new arena is warranted. I think it's more on the shoulders of "Why should tax payer dollars pay for it?" I don't see how a new arena, in an already wealthy part of town helps the tax base at all. Have the Pope pay for it, it's not a public university.

That neighborhood has been cleaned up a lot since the old Chicago Stadium days, but I sure do miss the great BBQ dives on Madison. The DePaul neighborhood seems pretty snobby.
