I hate to argue with all those stats, but I really can't believe Stevie averaged almost 5 yards a carry. I don't remember him ever ripping off a single big run last year, but I do remember him getting stuffed in the backfield several times. I don't recall a lot of 5 yard gains either. Did he have a couple of big games against someone?

When Stevie was healthy he was pretty good. The only problem is he was only healthy about 60% of the time during his career.

To further that, i definately cannot remember a 58 yard run....who and when was that???? Oh Spring Practice game......gotcha......if your indicating with those stats that Stevie and Arob have comparable stats and thus similar players - wow Wesley your killin me....i mean when Stevie broke into the open, i would see DT catching him.....AROB was gone....thats the difference.....everything else....well you can manipulate numbers in so many ways.....i don't care what happened in 2006 or 2007 i'm looking at what we need in 2008!!!!!!!!!!

Stevie had one against Texas I believe right before half. It was for sure Texas or OU.

he had a huge run as the last play of the 1st half against Texas...he ended up getting tackled inside the 10 to end the half

Gotcha, 58 yard draw play when Texas was in prevent and he padded the stats.....probably had 4 wideouts running fly patterns so the lb and cb were running with wr???

Sorry its not sticking out in my mind......but then again, not many of Stevie's runs did....nothing against him personally, just thought he never had the speed to be a big12 rb...thats all....

And if we want to really look at stats...against Texas with a 58 yard run in there he had 5.6 yard avg, very good. But, take the 58 yard run out, he had 10 carries for 4 yards...now tell me the stats are not misleading.....In reviewing each of Hicks games, it came down to him getting 14 carries and about 68 yards or something like that....which equates to about 4.9 yards per carry....but, if this was in mop up sessions against several of the teams in the middle of our season last year, that speaks volumes about how statistics can be manipulated to say whatever you wanted....Arob didnt have the cream puff early season to get numbers jacked up and our games down the stretch were close games so defenses were playing honest defense....

Not being a bandwagon, but i would take AROB or JJ over Stevie any day of the week...I just like the explosive plays that i think Both bring to our offense, i never felt any time that Stevie ever got the ball that i felt that feeling that this could be a special play.....I really like our RB situation going into next year, if we could get our WR as explosive as our RB our offense would be difficult to stop!!!!

I think Stevie could be a legit contender on "Dancing with the Stars." The dancing part, not so much the star part.

Re: Tale of the ZFB Tape - 2006 vs 2007

Hmmmm/ Checking for stats on cyclones.com:

    RUSHING
Stevie Hicks did have a 4.9 yard average, which is a yard average per rush than any of the three 2007 backs. All our backs in 07 averaged lessthan 4.0 yards a pop. Hmmmm.

    PASSING
Bret threw for 405 yards more and one less interception with 8 less passes attempts in 2006 than Bret did in 2007. Hmmmm.

    POSSIBLE POINT
Offense performed same under Barney for rushing and passing than this past season. Sorry, guys, just looking at the stats. No negative rep needed. So I delved further and here is what cyclones.com had for stats. It just seemed like we were doing better offensively because we were more organized, but our rotten start against Kent State was too much to overcome with stats from our last four games. When compared to 2006, 2007 final stats on cyclones.com saw more penalties, less punt return yards, lousier fieldgoal attempts %, and more penalties. See below for proof by lookiing at overall stats instead of individuals:

Iowa State - Cumulative Season Statistics

Iowa State - Cumulative Season Statistics

    TEAM..................2006.....2007......Cyclones.com Stat Evaluation
    RUSHING.YARDS.....1221.....1484...Better in 07 by 263 yards
    PASSING..............2593......2439...Worse in 07 by 154 yards
    TOTAL OFFENSE....3814......3923...Better in 07 by 109 yards
    POINTS FOR..........18.8.......18.2...Worse in 07 by 0.6 points
    POINTS AGAINST....30.8.......31.8...Worse in 07 by 1.0 point
    TURNOVERS.............20.........25.....Worse in 07 by 5
    TOTAL DEFENSE.....4707........4684...Better in 07 by 23 yards
    RED ZONE SCORES...78%........78%...Same
    FIELDGOAL.............8-11.......10-18..Much Worse in 07
    TIME POSSESSION...28:59.....32.50...Better in 07 by 4 minutes
NET PUNT AVE.........35.6........34.7..Worse in 07 by 0.9 yard
PUNT RETURN AVE.....10.6.......3.2....Much worse in 07 by 7.4 yards per kick
PENALTIES...............35.8.......42.4...Much worse in 07 by 6.6 yards per game.

Looks like the same team on both sides of the ball with a very similar schedule and record.

The upside is we should be much better offensively and defensively next year than this year or 2006 if Gene's crew do their jobs. We amy have a real punt returner also.

On paper, we saw no improvement statistically between 06 (During Cotton- DC) and 07 (Post Cotton - PC).

Need to look back to 2005 to see a difference when we had a better defense and we actually won the stat battle.

Re: Tale of the ZFB Tape - 2006 vs 2007

An interesting comparison would be to compare the latter halves of each season. Both to see if there's a collapse in 06 and improvement in 07.

    It seemed like we improved.
