Business Record: What would it take to expand the ISU football stadium?

Nothing too earth shattering, but thought I'd share since this topic never gets discussed out here:

With record football crowds the past two seasons and the expectation for large crowds in 2013, buzz about a potential stadium expansion has grown among Iowa State University fans. But don’t look for any big changes by next season.

True, Iowa State’s strategic plan since 2006 has been to eventually add seating in Jack Trice Stadium’s south end zone. The expansion would add stadium seating to replace what is currently hillside seating, and potentially an upper deck on top of that.

“It’s still a concept and an idea, an idea that someday we’ll do,” said ISU Athletics Director Jamie Pollard. “But when we do it, it’s got to be done the right way and at the right time. Now is not the right time, at least financially.”

Pollard estimates the expansion could cost as much as $50 million, and a number of other, smaller athletic projects would take precedence over enclosing the end zone. There’s no specific timeline on it, but he thinks it will happen.

Good article. Now if we could tie it to conference expansion, Hilton concessions, and Tim ***** "God's Favorite NFL QB", we'll have a "CF Favorite Topics BINGO".

Its time to finally have the end zone take precedence. With the growth in season tickets the longer we wait the more disruptive the construction process is going to be.

Is there some reason they don't start a fundraising effort specifically for this?

I don't understand why non-revenue sports can take precedence over one of two sports that bring in money? I understand wanting all first-class facilities but if you improve football everything else will get better by default. It should be number one on the list.

Because people earmark donations for certain projects. When you have those donations you have to work with the people to get their projects done. A happy donor donates in the future.

And football is #1 on the list. That's why they have a $22 million facility. Basketball has a facility because the Sukup's stepped up and partnered with the AD to get the job done. The new Cyclone Sports complex exists because people stepped up and partnered with the AD to get that project accomplished. If someone stepped up with $15,000,000 reasons for Jamie to start on the end zone he'd jump all over it. Until that happens however you can't just keep adding debt to the ~$50,000,000-70,000,000 I'd guess the AD currently has among:
    1. Cyclone Sports Complex
    2. JTS Videoboard
    3. Football facility
    4. JTS East Side improvements
    5. JTS West Side improvements
    6. Hixon-Lied Student Success Center
    7. Hilton Renovation
    8. Wrestling Renovation

And that's mostly projects which have been done in the past 5-6 years.

Is the press box the next project on the JTS list?

Re: Business Record: What would it take to expand the ISU football stadium?

Financially we could have already done this project, except the sports complex/football facility/videoboard took precedence. Therefore, I don't understand how this is still being pushed down the list.

I think the facilities have helped a lot with recruiting. Better recruits adds more wins and excitement which adds more money and a SEZ.

I am not even sure its that far down the list. I think its about debt. We need a few years to use some of this new money to pay down what we have already done. If we manage to sell out a few games in the next two years and average 52-54k per game I think we will see movement on the end zone in the next three years.

If we win 9 or 10 games in 2014, I could see a lead donor emerging

If that's the case I'd be more than willing to bet we won't be worrying about a lead donor emerging.

Jamie has been pretty clear that this project needs a lead donor. I think that is the only thing preventing it from happening sooner. Start a fundraiser, CF. I'll kick in the first $5...

I guess technically that would make you the lead donor...
