Washington State cancels classes prior to Oct. 31 game vs. ASU

Office of the President at Washington State University - Preparing for Thursday Football Game Oct. 31 They're cancelling classes in the afternoon, and making them optional that morning. Sounds like they wanted a packed stadium to be shown on TV. Don't know if this has been done before.

That's equally embarrassing for the school and the football program.

I dont see it as embarrassing at all. A lot of students come to big schools because of big-time things like football. When a sizable chunk of your student body (in washington state's case the only number i can find is 6200, when the university has 15,000 undergrads in pullman) will be wanting to go to the game and an even larger portion will be disrupted by the game (things like parking, which also are disrupted on campus when ISU hosts a thursday\friday game), it makes sense.

Yeah, but it's still supposed to be about the school first, sports second.

IIRC, Ames High let out school when their basketball team was competing for the state championship.

And it still is. This is one day of an entire year. School first sports second doesnt necessarily mean that football never takes priority.

And long-run, a successful and well-exposed athletics program benefits the school in a whole multitude of ways. So taking off a day of school to support something that will long-run benefit the school isnt even entirely just 'athletics first, school second'

But that's so students, staff and families can travel to Des Moines to support their team, since they can't be two places at once. Good god, this is a home game for WSU, at 6 pm...

Either way, I'm not going to my Friday classes the day after the Texas game. That's just silly.

This isn't the first time as Florida State has to basically shut down campus for two days to host a weeknight football game. But they have decided not to do this since 2002.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher would like Seminoles to host a Thursday night game (and why it won
