Re: So much for Bobby Elliott's character

I guess I'm a little bitter at the fact that he has used ISU as a stepping stone 3 times. I expect assistants to do that the first time they are hired (if they aren't looking to move up in the ranks, we probably don't want them anyway). The second time they are hired I would expect a little more loyalty. If you hire them a 3rd time, my expectation is that they will work until they retire here.

I don't know what handshakes and private agreements were in place, but I have a hard time imagining that Elliot was up front about his third stint here being a short stay. I don't have a real problem with Elliot recruiting Lazard, buuuuutttttttt I guess I do... I wish he would go away.

Re: So much for Bobby Elliott's character

its his job to try and get the best talent in america, and the #1 WR just happens to be committed to the school he used to coach for. Nothing wrong with what coach elliot is doing. however, I will say ND's campus and tradition is something special. If I would've gotten an offer from them, I would've gone there

Re: So much for Bobby Elliott's character

A lot of "conventional wisdom" in this thread. Sure, you can justify your actions as career-promotional or --my personal favorite--"in the best interest of my family", etc....I think Steve Alford has used all of these platitudes in his self-promotion.
However, Elliot has not been gracious to the ISU family after what coaches have done for him. Sure, we can attribute this to the coaches that were there at the time in offering him gracious opportunities. Sure "Everyone" does it.
I would not behave the way he has though......and I have a lower opinion of him because he acts like "Everyone" instead of an exceptional gentleman. Ridiculous.

Re: So much for Bobby Elliott's character

The OPs claim was about Bobbys sterling character and I have a problem with that characterization as well. When was this original relationship with Lazard already in place? When he was 5? When Dan McCarney gave him a job it was after his bout with cancer before anyone knew if he would be well again. Mac took a chance and he returns the favor by bailing on him. Everyone knew McCarney stayed out of recruiting Wisconsin after Barry Alvarez gave him a good recommendation for the ISU job. Mac could have gone back to those old high school coaching relationships but did not. The only Wisconsin recruit he took was Jamie Kohl when Barry called and said he couldn't use him.

Re: So much for Bobby Elliott's character

    A couple of things:

    1. I always thought the downfall of McCarney was when Elliott left the first time.

    2. I thought it was bush league for Elliott to leave the 2nd time under Rhoads. He's old and he's not getting a head coach job. I think a little loyalty was due. The next time he is looking for a job, I hope we don't hire him.

    3. This isn't his fault (although knowing his prior actions, I would be surprised if he lobbied for the article), but the Bryce Miller article REALLY ****** me off.

    4. There's nothing wrong with ND going after Lazzard, but if he goes there I will really, really, really hate Elliott, logic be damned.

Umm....you're joking, right? The very first thing Mac did was hit the bushes he'd been recruiting for UW in Pennsylvania and Ohio to shake some talent out, and Jamie Kohl was hardly the only recruit he ever took out of Wisconsin.

    As far as Elliott himself...

Good grief. Some of you guys are really petty, you know that?

You act like ISU was doing Elliott a huge favor by hiring him. Know what? It was a mutually beneficial relationship. Sure, Mac gave him a job. In return, he got a caliber of assistant coach that probably would have been looking much higher otherwise. And he did his job while he was here. You certainly can't say he didn't. Value for value.

And now you have the gall to complain because he's doing his job at his current employer. Hello?

Allen has said repeatedly that he isn't going anywhere. So Elliott has an existing relationship with him--so what? If Bobby was still at ISU--in other words, if CPR could have afforded to keep him, you'd expect him to be using that relationship the exact same way...if Allen was committed somewhere else.

So Bobby Elliott got to a point were he could take a (probably) higher paying, (most likely) easier job at Notre Dame. So what? That's LIFE. And CPR went out and found a coach to replace him who was probably also "grateful" to have a job in Troy Douglas. The same with Todd Sturdy. Just as Coach Klenakis is, in the wake of the Arkansas mess. And they are all doing their jobs, as best as they can.

In light of all that, my question is--so what?

Re: So much for Bobby Elliott's character

I'm just glad that Elliot is gone. In my opinion, our secondary took a huge step forward last year under Douglas.

Hopefully Lazard is "all in" and the trips don't mean anything. It would be great to have him in the cardinal and gold.

<koff, koff> Your opinion? Umm...you do realize that CPR is a former DB coach, and that's his specialty, and that if Elliott hadn't been able to cut the mustard, he wouldn't have been around....and certainly wouldn't have been hired by ND???

Which is understandable don't you think? Considering the potential magnitude of said recruit.

Elliot is a current coach and recruiter at ND. I wish he wasn't working this kid, but that's his job. Has nothing to do with character.

Re: So much for Bobby Elliott's character

Somebody mentioned having another coach at ND recruit Lazard. I'm pretty sure a lot of recruiting is regional, so a coach is to some extent supposed to recruit an area they know well. Elliott knows Iowa well, so naturally he is going to be the lead recruiter with Lazard, it's that simple.

It would be interesting to hear Lazard's report on what the visit is like and what Elliott says to him. Personally, I hope he just gives him a tour, a wink, and wishes him the best in his choice.
