So much for Bobby Elliott's character

Maybe I'm being overly critical, but I don't think Bobby Elliott is the saint that so many folks (including the DM Register's Bryce Miller) thinks he is.

ISU was the only school that offered him a job when he was seriously ill. Then after a few years he bolted to become the co-defensive coordinator at Kansas State. Then when he was out at K State, ISU took him back as an assistant. A few years later, he bolted for an assistant position at Notre Dame.

Now he is trying to poach the biggest recruit in ISU's history.

While I wouldn't describe any of Elliott's actions as unethical, I think they do reveal something about his character. So much for being grateful to ISU for saving his career at a time when no other D1 schools were interested in taking on a coach with serious health issues.

If he wasn't asking Lazard to come visit he wouldn't be doing his job. I don't see an issue here. Allen has made it clear that he will be taking his visits.

You may be right, but I know one thing. I would not be rolling out the welcome mat the next time Bobby needs a landing spot.

Re: So much for Bobby Elliott's character

I always heard that the combo of Elliot and Bielema at KSU were the most negative recruiters in the conference. Always talking trash about everyone else.

So I guess I understand how the Iowa fans feel about Bielema, because that's pretty much how I feel about Elliot.

Bobby is doing his job. Just like our staff kept after the lineman from Valley that was committed to Mizzou. It goes two ways. If he (Lazard) should switch it would be a huge get for ND. It's up to our staff to keep him committed.

Re: So much for Bobby Elliott's character

So CPR should tell a kid who is committed to Pitt or Auburn but still is interested in visiting ISU no? After all they gave him jobs at one time...

Every coach should do their best for their current employer. If you have problems with Elliott's recruiting as dirty, great, but this isn't part of any dirtiness.

Re: So much for Bobby Elliott's character

Here's the difference. If I'm an ISU assistant from Missouri and Mizzou had saved my career twice, I'd ask my head coach if one of the other assistants could take the lead on trying to poach Mizzou's star commit. At least then I'd sleep a little better at night.

    That recusal would be unnecessary.

Re: So much for Bobby Elliott's character

The problem is when a kid is committed and says very publicly that he is still taking his visits no other coaches consider it poaching. So Elliott isn't poaching - what about that is so hard to understand? Some people are so afraid of losing Allen that they aren't thinking clearly.

Re: So much for Bobby Elliott's character

I imagine that Elliott is being put under a lot of pressure to get a visit by Lazard. If I was his head coach and had an assistant who had a relationship with the #1 receiver in the country, I would be pushing him to get a visit.

Having said that, I really wish Lazard would not take these visits because of the spin it generates. I'm really hoping that he tweets immediately afterwards about how great Notre Dame is, but how committed he still is to Iowa State.

Ha, and the head coach would say GTFO.

Re: So much for Bobby Elliott's character

A lot of ignorance in this thread. Elliot already developed a relationship with Lazard so of course he'll be the lead recruiter for him at Notre Dame. Coaches, especially assistants, switch programs all the time. It would be unprofessional to "take it easy" on a school just because you enjoyed your time there. Also, when a recruit states publicly that he'll be taking other visits, how is that "poaching"? The coaches are simply doing their due diligence with one of the top players in the country. Jake Campos was a whole lot closer to poaching than this visit to the Irish is. That said, people who complain about "poaching" usually fail to realize that EVERYONE does it. Teams like Alabama get guys who commit to ISU. ISU gets guys who commit to UNI, etc. Also, are you guys really trying to criticize Elliot taking a higher position at K-State and choosing to make a lateral move tp one of the most storied programs in the country and last years runner up? Ridiculous.

Bingo. There's a lot of frustration and/or anxiety when a top "committed" recruit is apparently still looking around, but naturally fans are not going to criticize that player, they're going to take it out on the school(s) that said player is interested in...
