Saw a crow catch a rabbit today

I guess I always thought crows were scavengers, but I heard some noise outside my house today and when I peeked out the window, a crow was flying away with a baby rabbit in its claws.

It ended up dropping the baby rabbit in a neighbors yard (might have been too heavy) and then I watched as 3 crows outsmarted the mother/adult rabbit trying to chase them off and protect the baby.

I tell you...those crows were smart like velociraptors in Jurassic Park. They totally used distraction with the adult rabbit and then another bird snuck in and snagged the baby rabbit again and flew away.

Was like a Nat Geo episode in my backyard. Kinda wild.

Re: Saw a crow catch a rabbit today

This is weird. I saw two crows today relentlessly attacking a squirrel. Chased him across a busy four lane street in Ankeny. They were not just chasing they were trying to grab him with their claws and stab at him with their beaks. I've never seen crows do this in rural areas, timber and i've spent a lot of time in the woods and seen a lot of crowtivity.

My daughter spent an afternoon watching two crows trying to kill a garter snake in her yard. She claims they finally killed it by flying up a ways and then dropping it, several times.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Speaking of crows, I noticed a lot less on campus this last year than historically. Geese on the other hand, those bastards are everywhere.

I'm going to leave my windows open tonight. I hope a crow gets in and takes my daughters' two rabbits and two guinea pigs.

Jon Snow is a crow. He needed the rabbit because winter is coming.

That's smart. He's only one cat, but if he trains an army, he multiplies his efforts and his effectiveness.

    Good call, Willow. Good call.

I hope this keeps me off that cat's list.

You sure that they weren't turkey vultures? I've never heard of predatory crows

Re: Saw a crow catch a rabbit today

I doubt that crow "accidentally" dropped the baby rabbit. More likely that it dropped it to try to kill it so they could start the meal. I've never seen one go after a rabbit, even a baby one, like that, but I don't doubt it happens. Crows are wicked smart, and it's creepy how they work together.

If you want to see completely psychotic birds, and I'm talking right up there with Joe Pesci in "Goodfellas", check out Red Wing Blackbirds. I've seen RWB's get together and go after hawks & owls at 90 miles an hour with their hair on fire. They keep dive bombing the predators until they give up and fly off. I've seen crows do the same thing too, but with the size difference between RWB's and crows, I'm always more impressed with the RWB's.

Re: Saw a crow catch a rabbit today

I saw two crows going after a baby rabbit as I was walking into my church last spring. As soon as I saw what was going on I chased the crows out of there and shooed the rabbit into the bushes. I didn't see the crows or the rabbit after service. I guess the crows came back and finished their business.
