    Star Trek II

Wow. Into Darkness really delivers. One of the best movies of any kind I've seen in a long time. It was brilliant on so many levels. I'm excited to see what JJ Abrams can do with Star Wars.

Hats off (except in space) to a great flick.

    Re: Star Trek II

I thought it was better than the 2009 version. However, I'm looking forward to the JJ Abrams Star Wars movie. He has said he is more of a Star Wars fan than Star Trek fan, and I think he can deliver.

    Re: Star Trek II

I admit I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to the original three Star Wars films and the original Star Trek series and films with the original cast. I'm one of those weird people who things TMP was a good movie. However, I'm not that bad, given I thought the first JJ film was actually well-done--tightly scripted, emotional, action-packed, and blazing its own trail in terms of characterization and plot.

However, I was severally disappointed with this one. Dare I say Phantom Menace? It wasn't *that bad,* but the whole thing felt like a sloppy prequel that was all out of ideas of its own.

    Spoilers below.

    My major knocks against it:
-way too quickly paced... never a moment for characters to actually converse, live, or grow any before another explosion rips us right out of the moment
-it looks good... but too good... crossing away from the lived quality of actual sets into the video game look that plagues and dated modern science fiction so badly
-Benedict Cumberbatch is an awesome actor, but they give him little to do here besides punch and shoot people, no real character behind what could have been a terrorist mastermind
-there's like eight plot twists and revels in rapid succession and they lose their weight after awhile
-the action-packed climax lasts literally half of the movie to the point it just drags on forever... again, nobody bothered to give this film any pacing, so it feels like a forever trailer
-the major twist.... spoiler spoiler spoiler... just felt cheap and easy for me, I mean, that's the best they could come up with, after a few years to write this? it just instantly felt out of ideas, and the rest of the movie was almost line-by-line and shot-by-shot stolen from The Wrath of Khan
-this felt like a glossier mash-up of the latter with a few inversions at points, except no development of the enemy here to really show him as a threat or maniac other than characters saying it
-Cumberbatch, a pasty white English man, simply does not work as a Middle Easterner

Overall? Something like a C+. Promising beginning, but then it just went too convoluted and lost all momentum when it went into Star Wars prequel mode and started to be a big reference to its own mythology without any real new ideas or inspiration to drive it to someplace interesting.

"So let me get this straight: you want to fly on a magic carpet, to see the king of the potato people, and plead with him for your freedom... and you're telling me you're completely sane? I think that calls for two hours of W-O-O."

You suck. Kick back and enjoy a movie instead of trying to find ways in which it isn't perfect.

    Re: Star Trek II

I saw it yesterday afternoon, and yes, I also thought it was awesome.

I am a big Star Trek fan, but by no means a purist. I think that only true purists would be the ones who might not like it. Otherwise it's a total crowd-pleaser.

    Re: Star Trek II

It is the 12th movie, not the 2nd. But it could have been called The Wrath of Kahn II.

I actually enjoyed it very much. As far as Star Trek movies go, I would put it as the 3rd best behind II and IV.

    Re: Star Trek II

I liked it as well. Since JJ Abrams has created this new timeline with the whole Spock red matter plot in the first movie, bringing back old characters is completely fine with me. The actions is great and I love that there are no overextended lulls. The Spock-Kirk relationship is pretty funny in this movie.

The interesting thing though is that not a lot of people are going out to see the movie. It's on pace to make the same amount that the 2009 version made. Usually sequels make more. Don't know what the reason.

Finally, someone sort of understands the meaning of the thread title.....

No love for VI: The Undiscovered Country?

That one still stands out a neck above the others, IMO.
