    OWI limit of .05 recommended

    http://www.desmoinesregister.com/app...=2013305150059

I figured this would have been discussed and apologize if it's a repeat. What do you think of changing the OWI limit to .05? I would think one craft beer could put some people over the legal limit. While it is not a regulation, but a suggestion, I would expect at some point the feds will withhold highway tax dollars if states don't comply.

Re: OWI limit of .05 recommended

I don't think it will make a big difference. It's the repeat offenders who just get a slap on the wrist that are the problem there.

I would bet a lot of money that many more deaths/accidents are caused by texting (which is becoming illegal in most states, I believe), tired drivers, and distracted drivers. I think they've actually done studies showing that driving while tired is worse than driving while drunk.

Nothing but a money grab by a government agency that is out of touch with reality. Drunk driving deaths aren't being caused by people that are .06, they're being caused by the inability to get the people that are .16+ off the road.

Silly. It's about right where it is. If you have an organization with safety as their primary goal, all they are going to do is come up with more and more restrictions until we're only allowed to bounce around in little circles.

You really want to make the roads safer, make texting and driving more than a secondary offense. You really want to make more revenue via the police, make texting and driving more than a secondary offense. If I had a nickel for every person I saw glancing down at their phone from behind the wheel, I'd have a ******** of nickels. If a cop had a nickel for every person he saw glancing down at their phone from behind the wheel, they'd only get their nickel if that person was also running a red light, not wearing their seatbelt, or merging on top of the motorcyclist they didn't see in their blind spot because they were catching up on twitter.

Re: OWI limit of .05 recommended

Why not leave it where it is and make sure the penalties are stiff enough for people to not risk that line between legal and illegal. This country is way too tolerant on drunk driving as it is. By lowering the standard you start to lump the one beer after work with someone who definitely shouldn't be on the road. They are not the same thing.

Awful idea. All its going to do is drop huge penalties on a large number of those who arent a serious danger, and not do anything about the ones who are at .15, .2, etc who are the cause of the vast majority of drunk driving deaths.

How tired and how drunk? only 4 hours of sleep tired, or up all night tired. .08 drunk, or .2 drunk. Not sure a statement like that can be made given there are varying degrees of both. But I agree with the general sentiment that there is a disproportionate punishment for someone who may have had one drink too many and drive at .09 illegally, when it is perfectly legal for someone to be driving down a busy highway while eating mcdonalds and talking on the phone or screwing with the radio. Both are equally dangerous in my opinion.

Sleep-deprived driving - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Drowsy Driving (this one mentions both all-nighter types of "tiredness" and habitually being 1-2 hours short on sleep)

Facts and Stats : Drowsy Driving – Stay Alert, Arrive Alive
A study by researchers in Australia showed that being awake for 18 hours produced an impairment equal to a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .05, and .10 after 24 hours; .08 is considered legally drunk.

So probably not a ton in that 24 hour range, but it sounds like just being habitually tired (like a lot of us are) is dangerous enough.

If you blow between a .05 - .08 and are driving bad enough to get pulled over you probably deserve a ticket. If you get pulled over because a light is out, that's your fault.

so being really drunk is still worse than being really tired, but being habitually tired dramatically raise your risk of crashing.

I honestly believe that most if not all of the tickets that the police give out are money grabs. If it was seriously a crime then they would lock up the offender and throw away the key. Why don't they just ask for each motor vehicle operator for an extra $50 each year.

What about the police checkpoints they set up some places?

Yea because a "light is out" is a classic one cops love to use. Half the time I think people get pulled over when they don't have a light out. Cops in small towns get bored and like to try to bust people.

Doesn't one of the countries in Europe without a drinking age (Germany maybe?) Have a policy where if you get an OWI your license is revoked for life or something like that?
