What rights do part time employees have?

I'm a part time employee in retail. I want to change my availability to less hours (got a second job). What rights do I have if I'm denied the time off?

Not 100%, but I'm pretty sure you have the right to quit..

You live in Iowa, a right to work state. You have no rights as a part time or a full time employee.

that's not entirely accurate, there are discrimination and osha laws,

You have the right to get another job and they have a right to not accept your proposal, as they should. They've got a business to run and you work for them, not the other way around.

Re: What rights do part time employees have?

There are a lot of factors. How drastic of a change are you making to your availability? Are you still going to be available during the busy hours that they need the most people? Are you a productive, valued employee? If you are making drastic changes, and you are a slacker who only wants to work "banker's hours", they may just stop giving you any hours. Might sound harsh, but that's retail.

Re: What rights do part time employees have?

Back in college I use to write the schedule at Hy-Vee, which was very low tech at the time. We always had to deal with people changing their hours and we were pretty flexible. The only exception to this was that if people didn't want to work during the busy times (Weekends) they would get very few hours. Of course not all retail places have hundreds of employees to choose from. You also may just want to say you're going to school and not taking another job.

And yes I got caught scheduling the best employees for my shift :)

    Man I don't miss retail.

Ahhh, I remember the hours I spent writing the schedule, I feel ya bro!

As to the OP, it seems you're not giving us the whole story.. Did you already let your original employer know that you need fewer hours due to your 2nd job? Seems you're dealing with a hypothetical situation otherwise.

This is only (partially) true for employees without contracts. So it certainly applies to RedBlooded but not to employees, especially many full-time salaried employees.
