Honestly, I hate it. I was really hoping they would go with a more classic look. I mean, look at the Metrodome now....that's what this stadium will look like in 20 years.

For those unfamiliar with ETFE, it is the material used in the roof over Kansas City Live in the Power & Light District, Allianz Arena in Munich, the 'Water Cube' and National Stadium from the Beijing Olymics, and the roof at Piccadilly Station in Manchester.

I'm not a Vikings fan but those photos are impressive. The clear see through roof will be sick, especially at night when they show it from the air

Going to be the best stadium in the league next to the Cowboys.

Kind of has the feel of actual Viking architecture

Minneapolis-St. Paul will now have three tremendous pro sports venues - Xcel Energy Center for the Wild, Target Field for the Twins, and now this for the Vikes. The only building that's sub-par is Target Center for the T-Wolves.

There is an article somewhere analyzing teams with retractable roofs, and it appears that they are not worth the money. It's better to have one like this.

Re: New VIkings stadium design unveiling

I have mixed feelings on the stadium.

My favorite feature is that street level is well above the playing surface. So you walk into the main concourse at ground level which is above the first seating bowl and you don’t have to walk up as far (or need big ramps ect.) to get to the upperdeck.

An indoor stadium with an ETFE roof makes the most sense for a large venue in Minnesota (particularly when you look beyond football). But the purist in me sure wishes it was an open air venue. I'm not a huge fan of retractable roofs because of the limitations they put on the budget and design which usually makes the rest of the stadium not quite what it could be (unless cost is no object, see Cowboy Stadium).

The exterior has a modern art gallery look to it, which is good or bad depending on your perspective. It is not 'timeless' but will also not age like the utilitarian exteriors of many domes. In order to look dated it would need to look like other stadiums or buildings from the period which it doesn'texactly, but metal and glass certainly are being used a lot currently.

My biggest worry is what sacrifices had to be made to make it as 'multi-purpose' as they claim it to be. One I'm guessing is not a natural grass playing surface (which you could do with a clear ETFE roof). They showed configurations for football, soccer, baseball, basketball, motocross, and concerts. At least unlike the Metrodome, nobody will have to watch the Twins play there.

I suppose if you had to get a game in late Sept/Oct for the Twins, you could play there as well?

I love it. At $975,000,000 its only $15,000 per seat!Crazy that they couldn't get this done before the gophers ran away to help cash flow it. It's going to be awesome to see a game there though!
