    Smokers are untrustworthy villains

At least this is what some teachers are telling kids. My nine year old niece has the idea that smokers are, in general, bad people. When I asked her where she got this idea, she said that is what her teacher told the class. I chalked it up to an isolated incident, until last night, when a group of kids literally ran by my house after watching me light my cigar. I questioned their fear, which one replied while bolting "Smokers are dangerous people!"

Now remember, smoking is a filthy, dangerous habit, but to vilify a smoker is dangerous behavior as well.

They'll come around once they have their first bong hit in 7th grade.

After my kids went thru the DARE program at school, it took forever for them to stop lecturing me about beer being a drug every time I opened one.

My mom used to smoke in the car on road trips. I didn't know she was trying to kill me. I mean, I sat in the way back of a Pinto wagon. The type that would explode if it got hit from behind. But that damn secondhand smoke should have been my top concern.

I personally wouldn't smoke near my kid a whole lot. Maybe a cigar every once in a while.

Irony - these teachers are the worst of chain smokers.

I five years my daughter has seen me burn a cigarette twice. Probably helps that I only smoke about 2 packs a year, but I still try to set healthy examples. On the other hand, she probably wouldn't recognize me without my cigar in my mouth when I'm grilling dinner.

...and gun owners. And people who have some extra fries with their double cheeseburger. And people who drink sodas with more than 16 ounces in the glass. And people who don't wear their seatbelts 100% of the time.

About 15 years ago, I remember getting into it with someone over the civil suit all the states had against the tobacco industry. My comment was "just wait until they get done with big tobacco and they come after your Big Gulps and Whoppers". His response? "That's just a slippery slope argument. Government would NEVER get involved in telling you what you can eat and what you can't."

I'd say "who's laughing now?", but I'm not laughing.

Any coincidence that villains in movies are more likely to be shown smoking?

It was the coupes and the hatchback Pintos that exploded. The wagon was okay. You're mom DID love you after all!
