Re: BLOG: Four possible candidates to replace Otzelberger

Just asking a question and not meant to be inflammatory - I just wonder (in a paranoid way) if there's anything about the recent NCAA / Phone-Log gate that is prompting Otz to move on....I realize he mentioned his admiration for the Wash coach and his personal reason to be on the West Coast, but I'm just wondering if there's also reasons that aren't so public.

Touche... Went back and googled the conversations and I didn't see anything wrong with them. From the outside looking in though, I still think there would be better options out there.

With the direction Iowa State is heading, I think we are more than capable of upgrading.

    Sure

Off the top of my head:

Butler when they played in the championship
    Miami this year
    Oregon
    Those Nebraska teams

    After some research
    Cinci
    Virginia
    Gonzaga
    Iowa (HAHA)
    Colorado
    Georgia Tech

That's just a few. All of those teams are around our overall athleticism. Will you have a bunch of blocked shots and cool dunks of steals? No. Ever watched Wisconsin play? Boring and not all that athletic, but pretty damn good defensively.

I will let someone else find a facepalm image for any reference to the 2012-13 Iowa Hawkeyes.
Yeah, Kenpom adjusts all of that. Both are very respectable defensively. BTW-How many WIsconsin guys are in the NBA? KSU? How about Butler? Cincinatti? Louisville?

There have already been some good examples thrown out but I'll add another one...Wichita St this year...

Somebody already said defense is about effort...I'll go further...effort, hustle, good foot work...give me 5 guys that have those 3 characteristics and I'd take my chances every time with 30 seconds on the clock and up by 1 against Kentucky or Kansas...

I don't disagree with your premise (you don't need stellar athletes to play solid defense), but the idea that Wisconsin's success is founded on their exemplary defense is not the entire story. I'd argue that their low opponent scoring numbers have more to do with their overall style of play (Wisconsin has one of the lowest possessions per game of any team in all of college basketball) than it does with the quality of their defense (they don't have many steals/possession, blocks/possession, they don't take away more shots than average, etc.).

EDIT: Sorry, I don't mean to detract from the thread topic too much; I noticed that my post is really all about Wisconsin and not about Otz. Carry on.

Re: BLOG: Four possible candidates to replace Otzelberger

One of the things that kills me about Iowa State fans and all of this defensive talk is that it seems pretty damn obvious to me that unless you have an elite team with elite talent you can't be great at both offense and defense. Hoiberg has clearly decided he'd rather be elite on offense. And IOWA STATE WAS ELITE ON OFFENSE LAST YEAR. Maybe in 5 years, we will have the talent to do both at an elite level. But we do not yet. And, so, the choice has been made. Floyd picked defense back in 1995 and his Iowa State offense sucked.

Iowa State's defense was not great last year, but I thought it got really good towards the end of the year. I thought the defense against Oklahoma State at home was great, the WVU defense was great most of the game, I thought the ND defense was freaking outstanding, and I thought the defense against Ohio State was good.

Now, for the subject at hand, there are some pretty stupid suggestions. Gotlieb is a big no and not because he bashed Iowa State (which he DID).

My first thought was Lutz! I know that won't happen, but it would be awesome imo.

The reality is that CFH is going to hire someone I've never heard of and at first there will be some disappointment because it's not a splashy hire, but then a year or two later we will see it was an incredible choice. Book it.

I think former TT coach Walker should get a look. Very impressed with how he did this past season under less than ideal circumstances.

Re: BLOG: Four possible candidates to replace Otzelberger

Wish TJ and his family the absolute best. Moving on to a candidate and Sadler is the leader IMO Sadler is a great defensive coach with head coaching experience. Recruiting can be left to Cornell, Matt and Fred, Sadler will do some since he has ties in Texas. Sadler won in Lincoln and in basketball that is not easy, plus he can do game prep, scout opposing teams.

If its not Sadler I would look at Walker from TTech.

Re: BLOG: Four possible candidates to replace Otzelberger

I think Sadler would be a good choice if Fred is looking at X's and O's help, but I am not excited with him as far as recruiting goes.

And I'm also not sure how long Sadler would be here. I gotta believe he's looking to be a HC again as soon as possible.

I would think Fred would have a bunch of NBA contacts that could recruit like crazy for him, but might also know some X's and O's too?
