Why recruiting stars mean so much....

Wow - from another thread, i saw a DE...after checking his Rivals site, he has zero stars....great...another diamond in the rough....

Then you see the kids offer list.....

Do you really think that many college teams have it wrong...i think not....

    Jashon Cornell - Yahoo! Sports

Hopefully by now you've got my sarcasm!!!! The telling part for me is that ISU had two guys get drafted and like 5-6 total that signed to NFL teams.....Ive always said when we start putting guys in the show, especially if you get a few difference makers at one position, your recruiting becomes easier...I think the efforts of our coaching staff is paying off....

That is why i believe this will be the best class at ISU in some time....keep recruiting Mr Lazard....

    Fail.

He's a 2015 kid. No stars have been given to that class yet.

Re: Why recruiting stars mean so much....

On the individual level a star level is just a prediction.

Where stars start to matter is on the whole team level. If you're pulling in a bunch of players with more stars rated to them, on average you increase the chance that you have elite players and can afford some of those to be busts.. and hopefully some of your lesser rated recruits will beat expectations to even that out. Even on our level, we've had players outperform their rated expectations, but we've also had our share of busts that even that out.

Using one or a handful of players to try to say the rating system is bogus is ridiculous. Its no coincidence that teams with the best rated classes tend to do better over time.

While your logic about the stars is flawed in this particular case, I do agree that we will have our best recruiting class. But we need to get more guys drafted before it really starts helping our recruiting. If we can consistently get 3-4 then our recruiting would really pick up.

The whole 2015 class sucks!! Seriously, stars on average are pretty accurate.

Bingo! This post nails it. Its simply statistics. There is a ton of variance for an individual player when comparing his career vs. his star ranking. But when you get a greater statistical sample, 1 recruiting class all the way through 5 years of recruiting classes, there is a strong correlation between star rankings (recruiting success as measured by recruiting service) and success on the field.

And why wouldn't there be? All star rankings are is a way to measure how sought after a recruit is or an estimate of a recruits success at the colege level. I would bet that 80% of a star ranking is based on what/how many schools are recruiting him. Therefore they are based on what coaches (the ones who are paid millions to recruit the best players) think of a recruit.

Edit - I also think most recruiting service rankings are more reliable for high school than JC level players.

There is a reason the teams with the most 4 and 5 star players end up winning championships ie Bama, OU, Texas, and basically 3/4 of the SEC. The teams like us struggle to go 7-6 or 6-7 and we get "Diamond in the rough" or 3 star players. Yeah we get some that end up being pretty darn good. On average there is a reason those kids are 4 and 5 star kids and wanted by the best in the country.

I'm of the opinion that stars don't mean everything, but they aren't worthless, either.

Yes, there are teams loadeed with 4 and 5 star talent that play for NC's almost every year. However, the players themselves are not what make a team an automatic NC team. Look at teams like USC, Texas, Auburn...they are all stacked with more talent than most teams in the country, but if your coach is worthless and doesn't know what to do with the talent, it's all a waste.

Sure, it'd be great to be able to rake in all 4* and 5* talent, but we all know that isn't going to happen at ISU. I would love to be in a place where we can fill a class with mostly 3* talent, and have a few 4* and 2* sprinkled in. Get the kids into the system and let them develop under some good coaching to the level where they can compete day in and day out in the Big 12. I see this being a lot more feasible, and in the near future.

Cornell is pretty much a top 100 lock for when the 2015 rankings come out. I second the poster who said that stars aren't worthless, but they're far from the end-all-be-all.
