Biting Column on Big 10 Football

Of interest since it is a midwest piece from a Big 10 town. Reusse never has been a homer when it comes to ripping on sacred cows like the home team or the home conference.

Ouch. Ouch. Really hurt their toe.

No way, BIG is so downtrodden. Just listen to the world beating HuskerRed and Hok fans.

I can't stand Reusse. He would fit in perfectly with the Daily.

I did talk to a long time Big-Red fan at church last Sunday. He wrestled for NU back in the 1960's. He was lamenting the same things as Reusse, but specifically about NU: no draft picks, talent is sub-par, etc.

After reading that article it makes me glad we don't belong the B1G conference, and we get to recruit the state of Texas which is loaded with high school talent.

Re: Biting Column on Big 10 Football

In addition to what the author mentions, one only needs to look at population trends. Southern and western states are growing while the midwest is (relatively) shrinking and growing older. This in and of itself is going to result in fewer athletes in the big10 footprint, even before you look at how the southern states are putting out more top athletes per 100k.

The big 10 really has screwed up with realignment. They gained a has-been in nebraska and never-beens in Rutgers and Maryland. They needed to be expanding south, not adding more schools along their E-W line.

We're in a decent position on this at the moment as we've latched on to a southern (by population) conference, gaining us a recruiting tool into those areas. As currrent trends go though, the value of the state of texas will only continue to rise and we'll have to hope that the southern schools in our conference keep deciding its in their best interest to keep the big 12 together.

Of course one thing is for certain, however. When urban meyer brings Ohio State to the playoff, the media is for sure going to ring the bells and claim that 'THE BIG 10 IS BACK!' (regardless of the truth) after OSU rolls over the weak conference.

Like the article cause well everyone else (ESPN) is a ******* Big Ten homer. Its true their football is getting weaker which is why I hope we are in good shape with our conference. We have better recruiting pipelines.

Re: Biting Column on Big 10 Football

The Big Ten is down, for sure. The conference is too rich in history (and money) to be horrible forever, though. OSU, UM, and PSU still carry a lot of name recognition.

The way I see it, the BIG suffers from a coaching problem. There are a lot of coaches out there willing to change things up and recruit other areas. Very few of them are in the Big Ten. Urban Meyer, and...? O'Brien at PSU played a different style last year, but that was more out of necessity. Hoke had Denard, it'll be interesting to see how it goes without him.

The history is rich, but this geographic area is getting smaller which stinks, but true and athletes are not playing as much football instead are playing other non contact sports. Unlike the south it is football year round.

I suppose if what he said was a big shock there would be 200 replies. Considering we've know this for the past 5 plus years it's a non-story. It's always a fun read though.

Not as rich as you'd think.

Ferentz decided to no longer recruit Florida & focus on area much closer to Iowa. Doesn't that seem backward to you, then? I know he's trying to recruit Texas more due to Davis' connections, but he doesn't seem to be too willing to change.
