Yep, those were some bad teams, bad coaches, bad recruiters. Makes you aware that we did not start out as a bball school. We were better in fball.

Who cares about ISU BB in the early 1900s? There are only two years listed since 1970.

Re: Worst Teams in ISU History

Unfortunately, I remember first-hand two of those teams.....the Glen Anderson team that was the last MBB team before Hilton opened, and the Ken Trickey team. The saddest thing about the Tricky team is that was his second (and last) year at ISU, yet he lost like 7 or 8 more games than he did the first year, even though he had one of the best scorers in ISU history with Hercle Ivy both years.

-Be kind. That is something you will never regret. You will never say to yourself when you are old "I wish I was not good to that person".

Yeah I remember Ken Trickey, he was bad and his replacement: Lynn Nance was not much better. I went to the Drake game in Trickey's last year, played in Vets Auditorium and it was another patented Trickey Disaster.

That 1915-16 season was a tough one. I burned my season tickets that year.

Re: Worst Teams in ISU History

I bet some of the McDermott teams might have made this list if they played comparable schedules. It's never really quite fair to compare total records and win percentage with teams prior to the 90s to the current teams because the non-conference schedules these days are completely stuffed with home games against cupcakes. Just look at the noncon. schedule of the Trickey team from 75 - 75:
Vanderbilt, South Dakota, Drake, TCU, Iowa, Creighton, Nebraska-Omaha, San Diego State, UNLV, Saint Louis.

Followed by the 75 -76 team:
Saint Louis, UNLV, Tulsa, California, Arizona State, Iowa, Vanderbilt and Drake (2X)!

Many of those games are away or neutral games as well! If McDermott teams had followed that schedule they could have lost almost every game and went into conference play around 2 - 7 or so.

That's the one thing that bothers me and I wish would change about modern noncon. scheduling, there's just so few of decent opponents on the schedule anymore.

Re: Worst Teams in ISU History

I didn't expect to see McD on it when I saw the thread. He was the epitome of mediocrity.

No outstanding records, none awful. Complete "meh"

LE, Floyd and Orr each had at least one season with worse winning pct. Johnny had three(!). Yet they all had seasons that made up for it (and then some).

And if you look back at Johnny's nonconference schedules, they were tougher than what ISU plays these days. If Fred had Johnny's nonconference schedule, I don't doubt that Fred would have had a losing season that first year.

And if you look back at Johnny's conference schedules, you'd see that he had 4 fewer league games to play. Take the top 4 non-conf opp out of any Orr season to get a better idea of his schedules compared to present day.
