ESPN Bold Predictions for 2013 recruits

Dave Telep: The question said to be bold, so I'll get bold. Iowa State signee Matt Thomas, ranked No. 51 in the final ESPN 100, will make a run at Jake Sullivan's all-time 3-point shooting record in Ames. Sullivan made 270 treys over his four-year career at Iowa State. My bold prediction is that Thomas will take down Sullivan's record and become an All-Big 12 player the second half of his career under Fred Hoiberg. Thomas is that good of a player and shooter.

I was expecting something bold, not something so obvious.

With the system we run, probably a pretty decently risky/probable bet.

Luscious made 68 3s this year, so if he makes as many as he did every year for 4 years, it would be a good bet.

Re: ESPN Bold Predictions for 2013 recruits

Tyrus made 96 of 127 this year playing only 24 mpg, and 50 of 127 last year playing 20 mpg. Thats an average of 73 a year. Thomas only has to average 67, which I believe is very possible. I think the CF consensus is that Thomas is starting from day 1. A unconditioned Georges Niang played 25 mpg his freshman year (and didn't start every game). If Thomas' playing time and shooting ability is anywhere near McGee's, Thomas could potentially (and this is bold) shatter this record.

My very bold predictions for Thomas
    Fr - 26 mpg - 48 3pm
    So - 28 mpg - 66 3pm
    Jr - 30 mpg - 89 3pm
    Sr - 31 mpg - 88 3pm

    That's 289 total.

I don't see him having much trouble breaking that record unless he doesn't stick around for 4 years

I sure wish Sullivan had better players around him; he was special.

Bold Prediction: Monte will be our leading assist man his senior year.

same as the "bold" Matt Thomas prediction.

He played just fine on the road, too; he was a pretty consistent player and it was rare for him to get completely shut down.

I remember him having a monster game at Iowa in either 2002 or 2003 where he shot lights out.

I went back and looked at the numbers and while he did shoot a higher percentage at home each year, it was only his senior year where he had a crazy home/road split. 9/51 from 3 on the road in B12 games and 29/60 in B12 home games.

What site do you use to get your splits? Statsheet?

It'd be interesting to dig into those numbers a little bit more. I'm sure most players shoot worse on the road, so there's probably an adjustment factor that could be applied. I'd also wonder if it would be possible to exclude the last few minutes of a game where a team might be taking a bunch of desperation shots, or something like that.

Predicting a high school player to break a 4 year record at ISU is a pretty bold prediction IMO. At least decently bold.

Re: ESPN Bold Predictions for 2013 recruits

I can go bolder than that.

I predict that both Thomas AND Dorsey-Walker will break that record of 270. They are going to be a wicked combo on the wings with Morris driving the lane, Custer dishing the pill where it needs to go, and Niang bouncing in and out depending on who's trying to guard him.

Whether that becomes a GREAT team will depend on who the role players are coming off the bench...need a few Defensive stoppers, a solid 3 point bomber and a shot blocker for some backup minutes to reach that elite level....but I'm very optimistic.

Jake was a special shooter, and maybe even scorer as he had a nice mid-range game when he would step under a defender trying to run him off the 3 point line, and added a nice floater. he was a real competitor with fire in his eyes and the willingness to help where needed (remember the experiment with him at the point?) However, Jake was abused on defense. Tyrus will not be remembered as a lock down defender, but his ability to make hustle plays turning 50:50 balls into 80:20 balls made him stand out.

Doesn't Jake still live in Ames? I've always wondered if he might come coach at ISU. I believe he ran some sort of AAU or development program that Barnes went through.
