    BREAKING NEWS: I figured out Jack Trice's uniform number

    Hello good people:

    I wanted to briefly make a post about an awesome breakthrough in my Jack Trice research. ISU has always told me that his number was lost to history, but I just took that as a challenge. I have been researching his uniform number for months now and have gone through mounds of vintage yearbooks, university archives, dusty newspapers, and contacted dozens and dozens of people.

    Today, I finally got the answer I was looking for. I actually jumped out of my chair and screamed for a bit, because I have spent so many hours staring at tiny newspaper print and ignoring my lovely wife. Numbers are so important in our society--especially in sports. Heck, just a couple of weeks ago, MLB players all wore Jackie Robinson's #42.

    Now..... I am proud to exclusively reveal that Jack Trice's uniform number for his brief career was: #37.

    I will be writing a full story on this hunt and posting it later on my blog, but I couldn't wait to share this news with the ISU community!

    Nice work. Pretty remarkable that ISU wouldn't have any record of the guy's number given they named their stadium after him. Seems pretty weird. Either way, glad the hard work paid off for you.

    You've got a point but considering he only played 2 games 90 years ago it isn't terribly surprising. I don't think a player's number was as big of a deal back then as it is now, either. Also keep in mind that his story was practically forgotten for about 50 years. It wasn't until it was dug back up that a push to rename the stadium after him came to the fore. By then there wasn't a lot to go on. If they planned to name something after him right away it might have been very different.

    Almost every known photo of him in uniform was taken from the front, where only the stripes were visible.

    According to the NCAA, numbers were added to jerseys in 1915, but not standardized until 1937. The earliest ISU game program I've ever personally seen was from 1925 (two years after Trice), thanks to an avid collector. There would have been only two game programs where he was listed -- Sept. 29, 1923 (vs Simpson) and Oct. 6 (at Minnesota) -- and even then, there wouldn't necessarily have been a number included.

    Wow good work, crazy that it took that much hunting to find. That story and our stadium is definitely one of the reasons I'm proud to put on cardinal and gold everyday.
