I think Shontrelle should redshirt this year. He's still recovering from his ACL tear and if he sits out this year, it will probably give him more carries next year w/ Woody and White graduating.

Both are fine. White would have continued to play had it been a regular season game.

We could see some ability from new RBs, but it is hard to make decisions related to real game situations. For instance, how much did Wimberly and Nealy benefit from an O-line that was making some great pushes (better than we should expect in most Big 12 games)? Nonetheless, it is great to see how strong we are at RB.

The RB's do look good - all of them. I like Standard's pinball run at the end of the tape. I like Wimberly's leaping forward as he's going down for an extra 5 yards/play. The offense looks much better overall, let's hope that translates to the B12 season.
Hope we never have to look to whoever that 3rd string QB is...wow.

that is Creekmur, he played at Marshalltown a couple of years ago. We went to Arizona State I believe to play MBB but left and now is walking on for ISU. I thought he was going to play tight end. I also think he is a JR now?

    Re: Spring Game

I do like the looks of Wimberly, quick quick feet, Nealy as well. I love James White but he looks a full step slower than the other 2, at least he did in the highlights. One thing that the young guys have is 131 days to continue to get stronger I think that will help. Did Bibbs play, I saw Brun was in for one of the highlights, wasn't if we had both TE's

    Re: Spring Game

My guess is since we have two freshmen QBs we used Creekmur as an arm this spring.

So does this mean the Offense isn't any better than last year against a B12 defense?

Or that the 1st string D will be as good or better than last year?

It sure does point to the 2nd team D being a big drop off.

    Re: Spring Game

Sorry to add some reality here, Saturday is what it is, the Spring Game. Not saying that that game does not excite me for next year, and that it does not give our young team decent game type experience, which is truly needed. I have just seen way too many thing read into too much during the spring that never happen when the fall comes around. One item that did excite me is the comments on team speed, which is something I have never heard from any past Cyclone team, that tells me we are finally getting the athletes in the program we need to be successful in our conference. In summary, don't get too bent out of shape about this game.

To me I think it means that the offense have better depth than the defense.

    Re: Spring Game

I think all you can really get from a spring game is a bit of a read on some individuals....and very little on the overall performance level of a "defense" or "offense" as a group. So while you can see a guy like Wimberly and his burst, or George's clear step up in leadership and assertiveness on the field...you really can't tell if the O or D is better based on how they do against each other, you can only get a reading of how good they may be relative to one another, which tells you almost nothing. Worse, the coaches are mostly playing things very vanilla...the players know the schemes on the other side of the ball and the tendencies of the other players all too well...so you just can't over analyze how the "groups" are performing.

I think you CAN take something from how fast things drop off when you plug in the 2nd team though...that's worth worrying about. And we all know that James White is a solid, if unspectacular Big 12 quality running back who is now clearly the 3rd best guy in the backfield (perhaps 4th best with a healthy Shontrelle)...so we know we have two pretty darn good RB's now.

So its best to keep the expectations moderate and enjoy watching the young guys grow throughout the season...this coaching staff is building this team the right way but we may take a small step back this year. Or they may pull out a rabbit and surprise everyone...because our athleticism is as good as its ever been....but until our young guys gain more experience its going to be a roller coaster ride (for fans and coaches).

Did anyone notice the size that Washington has put on, up to 220, hopefully he is not losing speed, that will be awesome for put a hit on across the mid..... Noticeable different in the highlights.....

    Re: Spring Game

I'll just say this: it's going to be hard to keep both Wimberly and Nealy off the field. They were running at will out there. White is solid, but those two were easily ahead of him in my eyes.

This is the attitude I'm taking. 4-8 or 5-7 won't necessarily have me jumping off a cliff. 6-6 and I will be laying palm branches on the ground in front of Paul Rhoads wherever he goes.

    Re: Spring Game

As others have said the RB's seemed to do very well. I thought they all looked pretty good.

I seriously thought EJ Bibbs was a defensive lineman, that guy is HUGE!!

QB's made some good passes and the short to itermediate routes looked good. Neither (especially Rohach) had great deep throws.

Also the Oline had some nice stomachs.

“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”
